Subject Mathematics

Grade Level Grade 1

Learning Objective Patterns, Functions and Algebra

1.14 The student will identify, describe, extend, create,
transfer growing and repeating patterns.
Pedagogy Planning

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to move the
shapes and learn about identifying, extending, creating and repeating patterns.
Pedagogy

Activity TTW introduce patterns by reading the book Pitter Pattern by

Joyce Hesselberth.
After reading the book, TTW ask the students to look around to
see if they see any patterns.
TSW share what they found and why they think it is a pattern.
TTW define a pattern by saying “A pattern is a repeating
sequence. A pattern can include words, numbers, colors, and
shapes”
TTW define how to identify a pattern using ABA, ABB, ABC to
predict what comes next or what is missing.
TTW show an example of a pattern on the whiteboard.
TTW model how to identify, expand, and repeat the pattern.
TTW put a different example on the board and then ask the
students what they think will come next.
TTW divide the class into 2 small groups.
In group 1: (Independent work)
TSW have manipulatives to create patterns at their desk.
TSW write down 3 patterns in their math journal.
In group 2: (IWB)
TTW be at the white board and show the students how to use
the interactive white board.
TSW each have a turn to complete and expand at least one
example.
Group 2 will discuss why the answer is correct or incorrect.
The groups will switch after 20 minutes. (Group 1 will do the
IWB and Group 2 will do independent work. )

At the end of the groups:

TTW give 3 minutes to clean up any manipulatives/materials.
TTW wrap up the lesson by reiterating what we learned today.
TTW ask the students what a pattern is.
TTW give an exit ticket that has a red triangle, blue circle, yellow
square, red triangle, _________, yellow square, __________.
TSW be instructed to complete the exit ticket as a form of
assessing their knowledge and understanding.
TSW turn the paper into the teacher as an assessment of their
understanding of the topic.
TTW go over the answer after all papers are collect.
TTW ask if there are any questions about the topic.
TTW answer any questions that are asked.
TTW encourage the students that they did a good job with
learning about patterns today!
