Lesson Plan #2

Math Skills Recognize and read numerals 0-5.

Age: 4-year-olds

Number of Students: 6- four-year-olds

Content Standards:

1.PK.3a-Recognize and read numerals 0-5.

1.PK.3b-Estimate the number of objects in a set of 5 and verify by counting.

1.PK.3c-Match the number of objects in a set to the correct numeral 0 to 5.

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1. Identify numbers and match number symbols 0 to 5.

2. Identify the next number in a series of numbers up to 5

3. Count familiar objects or manipulatives in the classroom

4. Count each object once (e.g., one-to-one correspondence).

5. Identify and name numbers

Materials: Plastic Eggs, Sharpe, Mini Erasers (I happened to get some from Targets dollar section), & Pom-

poms
Activity: I would start with the song and get the kids to sing along to:
This would be a center activity for the child to recognize the numbers 1-5 with a visuals dot corresponding

with the number and look inside with the word associated with that number. The plastic eggs would be

broken apart for the child to match the corresponding dot to the numeral on the eggs. Then can proceed

taking little objects (mini erasers & pom-poms) and filling to eggs with the correct amount that corresponds

with the egg. While the egg is open the child can see the word that goes with the number of objects inside. As

the children are playing at the activity table, I will be walking around and assessing their abilities of the

activity, while asking the children to tell me about their eggs and getting them to show me their knowledge of

their counting and recognizing the numbers. This activity not only helps the children learn 1-5, but they are

also using their gross motor skills while playing with the eggs and grasping the mini objects. I could also have

added small tongs or tweezers for fine motor skills.

What Happened: (Hypothetically) The children did well on recognizing numbers, adding the appropriate

amount of objects to the eggs, and counting.

What Next: To develop a lesson adding to the numbers 1-5, to get the child to count and recognizing 1-10. The

outside play comes to mind, with chalk and a hopscotch game. Not only does the child see the numbers but

the teacher can assess their agility of balancing on one foot and hopping. Encourage the children to see items

and count them aloud when they see a series of items.
