Required: Pump Efficiency

6. If a pump requires a minimum of 2.75 m of NPSH, how high must the pump center line be
located above the water level in an open tank that supplies water to the pump? The barometer
reads 760 mm Hg. The pipe friction is 0.70 m and the vapor pressure is 3.51 KPa.
7. A two-stage centrifugal pump with 12” impeller diameter delivers 1,000 gpm against 250
feet head when operating at 1,800 rpm. The brake power delivered to the pump is 80 hp.
a) Find the specific speed
b) Supposed the speed is reduced to 1,000 rpm, what will be the capacity, head and
brake power?

8. A centrifugal pump discharged 20 liters/sec against a head of 17 m when the speed is 1,500
rpm. The diameter of the impeller was 30 cm and the brake power was 6 hp. A geometrically
similar pump with same impeller diameter is to run at 1,750 rpm. Assuming equal
efficiencies, what brake power is required?

9. A centrifugal pump discharged 20 liters/sec against a head of 17 m when the speed is 1,500
rpm. The diameter of the impeller was 30 cm and the brake power was 6 hp. A geometrically
similar pump 40 cm in diameter is to run at 1,750 rpm. Assuming equal efficiencies, what
brake power is required?

10. A centrifugal pump delivers 300,000 liters / hr to a pressurized tank whose pressure is 280
KPa. The source of water is 5 m below the pump. The diameter of the suction is 300 mm and
the discharge is 250 mm. Calculate the KW rating of the driving motor assuming pump
efficiency to be 72%.
