TIPS AND TRICKS FOR WRITING A FINAL PAPER

(1) ALWAYS refer back to your thesis statement: The goal of your paper is to prove your thesis; therefore, it is important
that you continuously acknowledge your thesis throughout your paper, instead of just in the introduction and conclusion

(2) Paraphrase: Direct quotes may be useful in certain cases, however, you do not want to use too many direct quotes in
academic papers. The professors want to know what your thoughts are on a specific topic, not the thoughts of other scholars

(3) Revise and Edit: This is extremely crucial and not many people truly take the time to revise and edit their papers. Ask
family, friends, or even one of your classmates to read over your paper to catch any grammar or punctuation errors.

(4) Headings: USE headings if possible!! Headings give a paper structure and organization.

(5) LESS IS MORE: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT just add ‘fluff’ to your papers because you are trying to meet a page/word
count. Professors can see right through this. Stick to what you know and be clear and concise.
INTRODUCTION
PARAGRAPH

• Broad to narrow

• Tells the reader what the paper will

be about

• Do not say “In this paper I will

argue” unless the professor states
that first person is allowed. Instead
try “this paper will argue” or “based
on x, y, and z, this paper argues
that…”

• Do not state any of the paper's

findings in the introduction (that’s
what your body and conclusion are
for)
CONCLUDING
PARAGRAPH

• Narrow to broad

• Should not leave the reader with

questions

• Should not introduce any new

information that was not previously
talked about in the paper

• You can state the importance of future

research in your topic area

• Not necessarily a good idea to start a

concluding paragraph with “In
conclusion”

• Do not say “In this paper I argued”

unless the professor states that first
person is allowed
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EXAM SEASON

1. Set GOALS!

2. Organize your study space

3. TAKE BREAKS (in order to lessen the likelihood of

burnout early on, taking breaks is important!)

4. Do a little bit of work/studying each day (instead of

cramming it all at the end)

5. Stay fuelled and hydrated

6. Study with friends (in person or via Zoom, Microsoft

Teams, FaceTime, etc.)

7. Practice, practice, practice

8. Get a good amount of sleep (especially closer to exam

time)
