The Holocaust: An Internet Discovery Lesson U.S. History

The following assignment requires you to spend some time exploring the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum website at https://www.ushmm.org/. Please copy and paste the address in
your url address line or some of the items will not line up. I implore you to really spend time on
this site. The site is filled with the history behind the Holocaust and details of the atrocities that
took place in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. Navigate the site to answer the questions
below.

After exploring the homepage for the USHMM, click on the “Introduction to the Holocaust”. To
get the full article which will have many answers to the questions below, click on “What was the
Holocaust?” Note that as you read, you can click on the words highlighted in blue for further
explanation.

5. ​ ​After you have read the entire passage, go to the section that talks about "Concentration 
Camps" in the passage. Click on “Final Solution” Make sure to scroll down and read the entire

“Nazi Camps” and once on that page, click on “Camp System: Maps”. Looking at all the maps,

7. ​Go back to the Nazi Camp page and click on the words, “Concentration Camp” in the passage 
called Concentration Camps. From here scroll down and click on “concentration camp system” 
in the paragraph that starts out, “From 1933, the concentration camp system, including its 
prisoners…” Scroll down to watch a 6 minute video titled, “Nazi Germany, WWII, and the 
Holocaust.” Once you have watched the movie, scroll down to see a section that has 
Concentration Camps across the bottom with different years. Look through the images for each 
of the years. After looking at the pictures (feel free to look at other pictures, too) ​write a one 
paragraph ​description and reflection of what you saw and how it made you feel. What are your 
impressions of the camps from the pictures? Did anything surprise you? Was any particularly 
disturbing, alarming, or different than you expected to see? Discuss in detail. ​ TYPE ​ONE

8. Now go back to​ ​https://www.ushmm.org/​. Click on "Remember" across the top. Scroll to
“Testimonies” and click on “Learn More” then under Personal Histories, click “survivor
testimonies” and copy and paste the name Alice Lok Cahana's in the search bar. Watch the
account of her testimony about arriving at the concentration camp, Bergen-Belsin. Read it on
the right, and then click on her video and watch the video (it is short). Write a one paragraph
reaction to her accounts of arriving at the camp. ​TYPE ​ONE COMPLETE PARAGRAPH ​FO​R

9. Now use the arrow to go back to the Introduction of the Holocaust page. Using the search
bar, type in "Children during the Holocaust". Scroll down and read the article. Then scroll
down to see several video accounts of adults who were children during the Holocaust. Chose
some to read and listen to. Read and watch the various descriptions of what life was like
during the Holocaust for the women who were children during the 1930s and 40s. Describe
what life was like as a child for these women during the Holocaust. Does anything surprise you,
shock you, or create any questions about what life was like? Write a full paragraph or more.

10. Return to the Learn About the Holocaust page one last time and scroll down until “Online
Tools for Learning and Teaching” Click on it and explore the various maps, photographs, and
activities the Holocaust Memorial Museum has prepared for students and write a reflection on
the most useful component of the student section. What did you learn from it? What was
particularly helpful or informative? What did you like about this section and how the information
