Lesson Idea Name: reSearch for Rocks

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S3E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
Technology Standard Addressed:
1.7c Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work
effectively toward a common goal.
Selected Technology Tool: Wakelet

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using Wakelet will support students learning by teaching them proper source finding and teach
independence.

Lesson idea implementation:

The students are assigned a research project by the teacher to discuss soil and types of rocks. TW introduce
the activity with an online learning Wakelet, using the tool that will be put to work later.
The activity should take 45 mins to complete and SW work in groups of three.
For the project, SW build an artifact that represents either the layers of the soil or a type of rock. They can
draw a picture, make a model using paper, legos, sand art, etc.
The research will be all up to the students. They will combine all their resources into a wakelet.
The students will be assessed by how they apply the information they learn to the project and marks on a
checklist.
Reflective Practice:
From doing this activity, students will learn how important it is to use multiple sources when researching a
topic, especially on the internet. Using the Wakelet tool also allows them to keep track of their resources and
give them something to come back to when the project is over, so they won’t have to research everything
over again.
The students can create questions from the information that they learned and use an assessment tool to build
their own study guide. This will give them a chance to apply their learning and evaluate the importance of the
information.
