METHOD STATEMENT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF STORE ROOM IN BASEMENT
FLOOR

1.0 SCOPE:
The objective of this method statement is to describe the procedure and control
measures involved in the construction of the store room at the Basement.
2.0 MATERIAL:
2.1. Concrete masonry blocks
2.2. Cement
2.3. Sand.
2.4. 10mm aggregate.
2.5. Water.
2.6. Blockwork & plaster accessories
2.7. Wall paint materials
3.0 PLANT & EQUIPMENT:
3.1. Masonry tools.
3.2. Paint brush, roller, Putty knife, masking tape and other tools and accessories.
3.3. Polyethylene sheet
4.0 PROCEDURE:
4.1 SAFETY
4.1.1 PPE should be used to avoid any untoward incident, especially safety
goggles & gloves. Safety harness should be used if the person works at the
elevation of 2m and above from nearest ground level.
4.1.2 Proper hand tools should be utilized. Mushroom head chisel or hammer
without wedge, can cause injury to hands and fingers. All power hand tools
will be checked prior to use for any visible defects. Proper electrical
connections should be established and industrial male / female sockets to
be utilized.
4.1.3 Proper housekeeping to be maintained prior to work starts to avoid any
tripping hazards & also at the end of the job.
4.1.4 Barricades should be set up in the work area to prevent the passage of
persons and vehicles.
4.2 BLOCK WALL:
4.2.1. Mortar shall consist of 1 part Cement to 4 parts of sand by volume (1:4)
4.2.2. The mixing shall be carried out by means of mechanical mixer/hand mixer;
the mortar shall be mixed dry until a uniform mixed is obtained.

4.2.3. Sufficient amount of water will be added and mixing continued to get
workable consistency. Excess water shall not be used in the mixed.
4.2.4. All mortar shall be used before the initial set has taken place and on no
account shall mortar which has commenced to set to be remixed with
water.
4.2.5. Setting out of block work shall be done.
4.2.6. The concrete blocks shall be water wetted before laying, to reduce water
loss in mortar by absorptive masonry blocks.
4.2.7. Blocks will be laid on a full bed mortar. The thickness of mortar joint will
be maintained approximately 10mm.
4.2.8. For interior walls, expanded metal Strip shall be provided at every second
layer.
4.2.9. Walls shall be carried up regularly without leaving any part more than 1.0m
lower than the other. Work which is left at different levels shall be racked
back.
4.2.10. The joints will be racked out as work proceeds, on all faces to be plastered.
4.2.11. All walls and partitions shall be properly cured by sprinkling water for a
period of not less than 3 days after completion of laying the course.
4.3 PLASTERING
4.3.1. Remove all traces of mold oil, paint, grease, dirt and other materials
incompatible with coating.
4.3.2. Mesh angle bead/corner bead shall be fixed in corners.
4.3.3. Expanded metal lath shall be installed properly over the chasing of
electrical conduits and other service pipes through the wall.
4.3.4. Plaster line guides should be installed to give the walls an average
thickness of 15mm and to ensure the verticality and flatness of the wall.
4.3.5. A dash-bond coat consisting of sand and cement in the ratio of 1:1 shall be
applied on the wall.
4.3.6. Plaster mix shall consist of 1 part Cement to 3 parts of sand by volume
(1:3). And, the mixing shall be carried out by means of mechanical
mixer/hand mixer; the mortar shall be mixed dry until a uniform mixed is
obtained.

4.3.7. Wall Substrate shall be evenly dampened with clean water prior to the
application of plaster.
4.3.8. Plaster shall be applied by hand to the nominal thickness with sufficient
material and pressure to ensure tight contact and complete coverage of the
solid base.
4.3.9. Finish the plaster with a steel trowel to a smooth, hard finish.
4.3.10. The area should be cured for at least 3 days.
4.4 FLOOR SCREEDING
4.4.1. Remove all traces of mold oil, paint, grease, dirt and other materials
incompatible with the screed layer.
4.4.2. Screed mix shall consist of 1-part Cement to 3-parts of sand and 1-part
10mm aggregate by volume (1:3:1). And, the mixing shall be carried out by
means of mechanical mixer/hand mixer; the mortar shall be mixed dry until
a uniform mixed is obtained
4.4.3. Place screed continuously in a single layer, tamping and consolidating to
achieve tight contact with bonding surface.
4.4.4. Screed surface with a straightedge and strike off to correct elevations.
4.4.5. The area should be cured for at least 3 days.
4.5 WALL PAINTING
4.5.1. The substrate must be sound, clean, dry and free from dust, oil, grease,
laitance etc.
4.5.2. Apply single coat acrylic emulsion primer to the walls by roller.
4.5.3. Apply stucco coat on the walls by Putty knife and let it dry for one day.
4.5.4. Apply two coats of acrylic emulsion paint that matching the color of the
existing wall paint of the surrounding area.
