Good day learners! This is indeed another day of
meaningful discussion and interesting topic about
another lesson.
I hope you enjoy this lesson as we go along with
our discussion. Prepare your notes and good luck!
Who would have thought that the things we often
used will exist these days? That is because of technology.
What is technology?
Technology as defined by google dictionary is “the
application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes,
especially in industry”.
From the time of our ancestors, there has already
been technology. Example of it are stones that were used
as tools for hunting and gathering food. From there, it is
constantly developing and revolutionizing until now
through the help of scientific applications and thorough
researches.
This has been developed from the desire of the
people to make solution to problems and make life easier
and convenient. Since then, the advent of technology has
transformed our lives.

Below are just a few examples of technology that we use nowadays among others.

The ICT includes both internet-connected devices and mobile ones supported
by wireless technology. However, let us bear in mind that technology is not just gadgets and
smartphones but also in other forms like the things that we use everyday.

According to the First Regular Session of the Fifteenth Congress, it is said that the
Philippines has been the “social media capital” of the world due to the large volume of Short
Messaging System (SMS) traffic exchange in the country. It has been estimated that the
number of cellular phone subscribers in the Philippines reached over 23 million and is still
growing at a rapid rate.

This citation says that most Filipinos are very fond of using technology especially
Millenials. That sometimes it seems impossible for us to live without it.
The technology was first brought to the Philippines by the Spaniards. Since then, it
became more developed and advanced up until now and has reached even the farthest part
of Puerto Princesa City.
This has brought progress and allowed us to reach heights of success in our society.
However, we also have to be wary of the disadvantages of technology in our lives.

Here are some notable instances where technology empowers us and is sometimes
enslaved by it.
Dimensions of Technology that are Enabling and Inhibiting

Enabling
1. Digital AccessIt is present everywhere. It
provides useful and hassle-
free information convenient
for the user.
2. Commerce Help support and connect
sellers and consumers
through web platforms and
mobile. Easier transactions
with the use of POS (point
of sales) machines.
3. Communication People can be reached
everywhere provided that it
has a signal. No need to pay
long-distance charges just
to reach someone.
4. Education Teachers and students now
hold sessions even without
face-to-face classes.
5. Manufacturing Cheaper cost of labor and
greater outputs are
produced compared to the
manual workforce.
Inhibiting
Although we live in a digital era, not
everyone has access to technology.
PCs remain expensive, limited, and
poor at providing data connectivity.
People are hesitant to give personal
and financial information due to the
authenticity of transactions and the
legitimacy of their existence.
Miscommunication happens because
we do not have verbal cues, including
genuine facial expression, tone of
voice, and body language instead we
use emojis and emoticons as a
replacement for our feelings and
reactions.
Students would be too focused on
playing games and engaging with
other social media sites resulting in
low academic performance.
Machines fail to produce quality
products.

Indeed, there are numerous benefits of technology on personal, work, and social life,
and some are listed below.
1. Ease of Access to This is because the information from all around the globe
Information is widely available on the internet. Everything you need is
just one click.
2. Saves Time Modern technology allows you to enjoy your outings by
helping you navigate anywhere. One can search for a
particular place and then even pinpoint their specific
destination.
3. Ease of Mobility Airplanes, electric trains, and cars which are being
improvised every single day have made all this possible.
4. Better Communication Letters were the most common means of communication
Means less than a century ago, but now instant messaging and
sharing of photos and videos makes it easier.
5. Cost Efficiency One of the main goals of technology includes making
things cheaper and more affordable for people.
6. Innovation in Many Technology has truly resulted in digitization and

7. Improved Banking You can transact and pay your bills now through online
banking without hassle.
8. Better Learning You can improve your teaching skills and integrate

10. Improve work This allows an employee to work remotely which increases

Although technology is powerful it has also the common risks that are evident
nowadays such as the following:
1. Identity theft It occurs when a person obtains personal information to
use their identity to commit fraud, making unauthorized
transactions.
2. Cyberbullying It is committed when someone belittles or humiliates a
person on social media platforms. A person who commits
this crime is often called a “troll”. They use fake identities
to stalk their targets.

 3. Online predators These persons are engaged in malicious acts on the
internet where victims are often minors.
4. Minimizes person-to- Due to family distancing, people in the same room don’t
person contact talk to each other but only to their devices.

5. Vulnerability to cyber
threats.
6. Inaccurate information
It is always a good idea to stay current and informed about
the latest cyber threats like hacking, viruses, spam, and
phishing, plus the tools and resources that can mitigate
them.
The internet contains a lot of information that needs to be
analyzed and filtered to ensure the reliability of the source.

With some above-mentioned risks of technology, people are expected to be more

careful and responsible for using it. No matter how powerful technology is, it is most likely
to fail or cause a problem. The following are the most common problems of technology:

1. Security Breach

3. Phishing
4. Malware
5. Failed Mechanism
6. Incapacitated Person

For us to minimize these risks, we must do the following:

1. Secure computers, servers, and wireless networks.

2. Use anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, and firewalls.
3. Regularly update software to the latest versions.
4. Use data backups that include off-site or remote storage.
5. Secure your passwords.

Man did not create technology to give problem, it is made to provide comfort and
convenience to humanity. Thus, we must be careful and responsible in using it.
