Have you ever asked somebody who has experienced accessing the information society?
Probably, this is what he or she will tell you: The industries have revolutionized drastically.
Gone are the days when information had to be engraved in wooden newsletters.
Evidently, through the innovative technology, information nowadays is just one click
away. It provides a wide array of opportunities with commendable effects on education,
commercial interest, as well as economic globalization. With digitization and digitalization,
access to information is just as quick as a blink of an eye. Through constant exposure to
information technology, we become well-versed in its features. However, as we benefit from
its use, we, at times can become exposed to some vulnerabilities, such as threaths, risks,
abuse, and misuse.

Challenge Question: As a student, what do you consider the most promising opportunity,
and unavoidable challenge of media and information?

1
OPPORTUNITIES
Economy
Aside from political stability, stable economic environment and education, it is no
secret that quality of media is one of the factors considered as influential in economic
expansions and redefining the global landscape. As today’s consumer spends up to nine
hours per day online and even in other form of media platforms, media have proven to be
the most effective way for businesses to reach new audiences on a global scale.

Education
Study shows that people learn abstract and novel concepts more easily when they are
presented in both verbal and visual form (Salomon, 1979). Also, other empirical study shows
that visual media make concepts more accessible to a person than text media and help with
later recall (Cowen, 1984). In Willingham's (2009) research, he asks a simple question to
make his point, "Why do students remember everything that's on television and forget what
we lecture?" -- because visual media helps students retain concepts and ideas. Bransford,
Browning, and Cocking (1999, p 194) also note the crucial role that technology plays for
creating learning environments that extend the possibilities of one-way communication
media, such as movies, documentaries, television shows and music into new areas that
require interactive learning like visualizations and student-created content. With the growing
opportunities granted by the media and information such as producing a visually-appealing
and technology-based instructional materials, obtaining vast and reliable learning
information and references, and infusing classrooms with digital learning tools, education
accelerates the rate of acquired learning, educational productivity, effective program delivery
and better utilization of teacher’s time.

Social
Media have transformed the means we communicate with each other. It has an
effortless way to link with the like-minded people. Regardless of the geographic location,
culture and religion, media are helpful in reviving and preserving relationships with other
people.

Political
It is said that media in government is a game changer. People can engage in direct
dialogue with politicians, civic officials, and even entire government agencies. With its novel,
dynamic and serious consequences for democratic governance and politics, media have
radically altered the way government agencies operate and political leaders communicate.

CHALLENGES
Threats
Before the advent of social media, people had to go outside to socialize with their
friends. But now, almost all have a social media account where they tend to showcase their
occurrences and communicate virtual friends on their lives. Whatever activities they have
been engaging on their virtual life, some of them are taking social media safety less serious
than they should.
Social media has taken this threat to a new level for two reasons: 1) People are more
willing than ever to share personal information about themselves, and 2) Social media
platforms encourage a dangerous level of assumed trust. From there it's a short step to
telling your “new friend” about your company's secret project, your new friend might be able
to “help” you with that project if you would only give him a password to gain access to a file
on your corporate network. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
increasingly are being used by enterprises to engage with customers, build their brands and
communicate information to the rest of the world. But social media for enterprises isn't all
about "liking," "friending," "up-voting" or "digging." For organizations, there are real threats
to using social media, ranging from damaging the brand to exposing proprietary information
to inviting lawsuits (Nerney, 2011).
2
Risks
Media play a big part of many people’s social and creative lives. However, it poses
some risks as well. Risks may include being exposed to inappropriate content, like mean,
violent or sexual comments and pictures; uploading inappropriate media materials, like
embarrassing or provocative photos or videos of themselves or others; sharing personal
information with strangers – for example, phone numbers, date of birth or location;
cyberbullying; exposure to so many ads that consumers are becoming desensitized to
advertising; and data breach, like having their data sold on to other organizations.

Abuse
Social Media & Technology Abuse (also referred to as Digital Abuse) is defined by the
National Domestic Violence Hotline as the use of technologies such as texting and social
networking to bully, harass, stalk or intimidate a partner. Often this behavior is a form of
verbal and emotional abuse perpetrated online.

Misuse
In spite of the fact that social media is a great tool for information but have been
misused by people at large. This is in particular on communicating misinformation that is
regardless of an intention to deceive and disinformation that is spread to mislead. This
technology is doing more harm than good. Social media is not only misused by students but
are also by businessmen, employees, etc. While talking about the misuse, politics comes into
mind. Social media is as prone to misuse as your computer is to the virus. It was stated that
a new practice has been started to defame people, community, religion, etc. through social
media. Some misuses that are associated with the social media are: Defamation, flase and
unrealiable information, sexual predators, loss of privacy, and fraud (Ratsugi, 2016).

The use of media and information is increasingly developing day by day. It is

imperative to remain closely informed about the rapidly changing society, because the
society itself is not prepared to bear with the opportunities and challenges brought about by
media.

There are no established regulations to control the result of unacceptable and

untoward social behavior posed by the challenges in media and information use. Moreover,
the society is not ready to adapt to some of the opportunities offered by media, like the use
of technology due to digital gap among neighboring countries. If there are no limitations on
its use, the repercussions will accumulate. Therefore, people need to change the destructive
patterns of the use of media and information before it destroys the society at large.
