OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should:
• describe the three different distributions of Plate Tectonics;
• analyse the connection among the distributions;
Defining Success

• identify the most common disaster in the locality; and

• relate the Big One with the different distributions of Plate Tectonics.
ASSESSMENT: KEY CONCEPTS:
Formative/ • Plate boundaries
Summative • Products of Plate Boundaries
Assessment
• Relationship among the products
• The Big One

ELICIT: 5 MINUTES
Ask students if they have heard about the “Big One”, which is assumed to be the strongest earthquake
to hit the Philippines. Also, ask students what the possible evidence are as to why it can be a strong
earthquake.
Learning Cycle

ENGAGE: 5 MINUTES
Ask students the following questions. They can raise their hands if they want to answer.
1. Now, imagine if the Big One hits our school at this moment. The buildings will collapse, there
would be a lot of students running here and there. What would you do?
2. Where will you immediately go?
Make them understand that faults are the major evidence of earthquakes. Then, make them name some
places in the municipality that has mountain ridges or valleys (depending on the context of the class).
Make them understand that these are products of plate tectonics.

EXPLORE: 20 MINUTES
Group the students into 5 and make them understand about the Plate Tectonics using the online
simulation from Interactive Dynamic Earth found at: https://www.learner.org/wp-
content/interactive/dynamicearth/tectonicsmap/
EXPLAIN: 10 MINUTES
Let the leader of the group explain their answers through the guide questions:
1. What are the different types of plate boundaries?
2. What are the possible products of the plate boundaries?
3. How are these products distributed?
Correct misconceptions if there is any.
ELABORATE: 10 MINUTES
Relate the findings on how these products are distributed to the Big One.
Relate the answers of the class based on their locality by providing answers to the following questions.
1. What is the most common product of plate boundaries in the locality?
2. What are the preventive measures done by the Government to ease its effects?
EVALUATE: 10 MINUTES
Let the students open Kahoot (an online game-based learning platform) and enter the code that the
teacher provides. Ask questions and let the students answer. The game scores based on the correct answer
and on how quick the students answer. In this, students will be more engaged in answering since they
can immediately see their rank among other students.
EXTEND:
Let the students provide a timeline on the occurrence of the different evidence of the Big One (like
earthquakes and faults) and present in class the next meeting.

Answers

ELICIT (Answers may vary)

Possible evidence are the faults, multiple earthquakes in the same region, presence of mountain ranges.

ENGAGE (Answers may vary)

The best thing to do is to duck, over, and hold. The best place to go to are under a sturdy chair or table or
escape to an open field.

EXPLAIN (Answers may vary)

1. What are the different types of plate boundaries?
• Convergent, Divergent, and Transform boundaries.
2. What are the possible products of the plate boundaries?
• Convergent – Mountain Ranges, Volcanoes
• Divergent – Rift Valleys
• Transform – Split riverbeds
3. How are these products distributed?
• They are distributed in the same position, and they re-occur every time.
• They occur at the edges of plates.
