Audio system and pairing
Welcome to BMW
We are delighted that you have
chosen a BMW Motorrad audio
system. Before riding your mo-
torcycle for the first time, famil-
iarize yourself with the use of the
system to be able to operate it
safely even in road traffic.
To do this, please read these
operating instructions carefully.
If you have any questions con-
cerning this audio system, your
authorized BMW Motorrad re-
tailer is always happy to provide
advice and assistance.
With the audio system, the com-
munication system and the nav-
igation system, BMW Motorrad
provides you with three vehi-
cle components which can ex-
change data with each other via
the Bluetooth radio standard. In
addition, further Bluetooth-ca-
pable systems can also be inte-
grated, e.g. mobile phones. This
makes it possible to use a phone
and listen to music and naviga-
tion instructions without having to
deal with cables.
Before the systems can
exchange their data, they must
recognize each other. The steps
required for this purpose are also
explained in these instructions.
This description is based
on the K 1600 GT and
K 1600 GTL, but also applies to
the R 1200 RT. Exceptions are
described separately.

Media storage devices
as playback devices
The audio system scans the me-
z dia storage device for tracks en-
coded as MP3s. While the scan
is taking place, LOADING is
shown in the display. Subdirecto-
ries are also scanned. The track
titles in the MP3 data (in the ID3-
Tag) determine the alphabeti-
cal order of the playback list and
the title displayed on the system.
This may not necessarily be the
same as the filename.
Only characters from the ASCII
character set (Windows 1252)
can be displayed. Other charac-
ter sets are not shown at all or
only incorrectly.
Playlists can be created as a
means of sorting tracks. The
tracks in a playlist are played in
the order in which they are listed.
The USB stick used must sup-
port the "Mass Storage Format",
may only have one partition and
must be formatted according to
the FAT 16 or FAT 32 standard.
If an MP3 player is connected
to the audio system via the USB
connection, it must also support
the "Mass Storage Format".
iPod playback
The audio system will first try
and detect any tracks saved on
an iPod. While the scan is taking
place, LOADING is shown in
the display. The track titles from
the iPod are used as titles for
alphabetic sorting and display.
The playlists from the iPod will
also be found in addition to the
individual tracks. Tracks are
played back in the sequence
required by the iPod.
The iPod receives power via the
adapter cable.
iPhone
The iPhone can also be used as
a playback source in the same
ways as the iPod. The telephone
functions are switched off during
this time and corresponding in-
formation may be shown in the
display of the iPhone.
Sound quality
To achieve the best possible
sound quality, BMW Motorrad
recommends making the follow-
ing settings in the system set-
tings of the iPod/iPhone:
Volume limit: ON
Equalizer: OFF.
Other playback devices
The audio system outputs the
track that is currently being
played back by the playback
device via the speakers. The
playback device cannot be
controlled by the system if it is
only connected via the jack plug.

The Bluetooth function may not
be offered depending on the
country of use.
Bluetooth is a short-range wire-
less technology. Bluetooth de-
vices are short-range devices
(transmitting with a limited range)
on the license-free ISM band
(Industrial, Scientific, Medical)
between 2.402 GHz and 2.480
GHz. They can be operated any-
where in the world without a li-
cense being required.
Although Bluetooth is designed
for establishing connections over
short distances as robustly as
possible, faults are possible as
with any other wireless technol-
ogy. Connections can be sub-
ject to interference, can be briefly
interrupted or can even be lost
completely. Especially when sev-
eral devices are operated in one
Bluetooth network, there is no
guarantee for smooth operation
in every situation.
Possible sources of interference:
Interference fields caused by
transmission masts etc.
Devices with incorrectly imple-
mented Bluetooth standard
By nearby Bluetooth-capable
devices
Note on health:
The body of scientific data
available at this time gives no
grounds for assuming that
Bluetooth can have negative
effects on human health. The
BMW Motorrad audio system
transmits at a maximum of
10 mW; a mobile phone by
contrast can have a transmit-
power rating as high as 2 W.
The ISM frequency band used
by Bluetooth is reserved for the
worldwide use of devices in the
industrial, scientific and medi-
cal sectors and given the low
transmit-power ratings, Bluetooth 7
devices are considered safe in

Two Bluetooth devices have to
recognize each other before they
can communicate. This process
of mutual recognition is known
as pairing. When two devices
have paired they remember each
other, so the pairing process is
conducted only once, on initial
contact.
In order to also connect the pas-
senger helmet to the audio sys-
tem in addition to the rider's hel-
met, two BMW communication
system with the Bluetooth stan-
dard 2.0 must be used. If both
BMW systems are using Blue-
tooth 1.2, only one helmet may
be connected to the audio sys-
tem.

tem for information on Bluetooth

In principle, other systems can
also be used, but BMW Motorrad
cannot guarantee proper function
due to possible deviations in the
specifications and different com-
bination options. The systems
must have the following features:
Navigation devices:
HFP (Hands Free Profile) or
HSP (Headset Profile) to com-
municate with the BMW com-
munication system .
Mobile phones:
HFP/HSP to communicate
with the BMW navigation sys-
tem or the BMW communica-
tion system.
Communication systems:
A2DP (Advanced Audio Dis-
tribution Profile) BMW to have

mitted.
HFP/HSP, to communicate
with the BMW navigation sys-

Connecting two communication
systems (rider and passenger
systems) with the audio sys-
tem is possible only with BMW
Motorrad systems. These sys-
tems must support Bluetooth
standard 2.0 or higher. Other-

cannot be used in this case.
The correct sequence during
pairing is critical for the proper
operation of all systems:
