SOILAND AND WATER POLLUTION BY MINING
INTRODUCTION
Economic activity in Peru is based mainly on the exploitation of minerals, in this mining
activity it is impossible to degrade the waste from tailings such as heavy and reactive
metals with their high toxicity, which contaminate soils, surface and underground waters,
damaging the ecosystem and the production of food for humans.
This problem of soil and water contamination has been dragging on since colonial times
when the Spanish began to extract these minerals. For example, the acid drainage of rocks,
which is generated by the contact of the air with the rain, forming acidic water with a pH
lower than 2 and containing heavy metals, contaminating both the soil and water
ecosystems, killing any living being that comes into contact with water and causing
health damage to human beings.
This water must be treated, in the following way: modifying the acidic pH that it has to a
natural pH, so that the heavy metals that are there can precipitate later, it must be filtered,
so that the water reaches its initial state and can be used for agricultural irrigation and etc.
CONCLUSION
The environmental impact of a mining project is inevitable, especially in the degradation
of soils and water.
This pollution causes the presence of elements, minerals and metalloids, which cause
disturbances in the ways of life of human populations and their ecosystems.
