Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the Development and
Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints
in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need
to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included
in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and
independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of
the learning resource while being an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the module. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.

At the end of this module, the student will be able to:


1. Create crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials, guided by local
traditional techniques (e.g. batik, silk weaving, etc.)
2. Derive elements from traditions/history of a community for one’s artwork.
3. Show the relationship of the development of crafts in specific countries in
Southeast Asia, according to functionality, traditional specialized expertise and
availability of resources (e.g., pottery, weaving, jewellery, and basketry)
4. Show the commonalities and differences of the culture of the Southeast Asian
countries in relation to Philippine culture

Stone carving has been both a passion and a livelihood for many Cambodian
sculptors.
The art of stone carving in
Cambodia has a very long, fascinating
history which goes back to the foundation
of the Khmer nation.
This famous sculpture in Wat Pho in
Bangkok is 46 meters long and 15
meters high. It is made of plaster on a
brick core and finished in gold leaf. The

The most amazing sculptures are the Asmat wooden sculpture of Papua,
the Dayak wooden mask and sculpture, the ancestral wooden statue of Toraja, and
also the totem-like sculpture of Batak and Nias tribe.

From the classical Hindu-Buddhist era of


Indonesia, the most prominent sculptures are the
hundreds of meters of relief and hundreds of stone
Buddha at the temple of Borobudur in central Java.

This is very popular along the walls and stone


columns of the ancient Greek and Roman buildings
and can still be seen today on many famous buildings,
including the Colosseum.

Relief sculpture is practiced today by artists and


architects, done with stone, marble, bronze, and many
other substances.

There are three main types of relief sculptures:

1. Alto form- is almost completely carved from its surface


- highly shaped, with very little of the structure touching the base or plane
- could possibly stand alone if the base or plane were removed
- these are similar to the Egyptians’ alto-relief sculptures of gods or Pharaohs
attached to their temples
- common among Greeks and Romans

2. Bas form- is a relief that barely extends past the base


- common as wall decorations on Greek or Roman buildings and are the type
mostly seen on the Colosseum

3. Sunken relief sculpture - an image that is carved into the surface, rather than
out of it.

The Merlion was conceived because the Singapore Tourism Board


(STB) felt the country lacked a distinct image representing the nation and its history.
They set out to fabricate an icon, which could tap into the particular myths and folklore of
the area, many of which feature sea-beasts and magical fish-creatures.

The Merlion is also partly inspired by the story of how Singapore got its name, or
‘The Singapura Story’. The Sentosa Merlion is the biggest replica, standing at 37
meters and made from glass- reinforced concrete.

society which reflects how they live, how the culture is during a certain time and how did
the people from a community able to retain its heritage through artworks and put into arts
all of their techniques which they acquire in either from the teachings of their masters of
from the elements they see and feel in the environment and in their community.

Making of Merlion Statue Model


Procedure:
1. Choose a bar of soap. Any soap
will work, however, a larger bar is
easier to hold and gives more
material to work with. Make sure you
have a well-covered area to do your
soap carving on.

2. Choose a knife to use. Soap is


fairly soft, so a sharp knife is not
absolutely necessary. Plastic knives,
spoons, or Popsicle sticks would also
work. This is especially important to
note if you are doing this project, to
prevent any accidents from using
sharp knives.

3. Draw an outline of your carving on


one side of the soap. You can either
draw the outline first using a pencil, or
directly use a knife, orange wood
stick, or toothpick to scrape the
outline into the soap.

4. Remove the soap outside the


outline using small slivers or chips.
Make sure to scrape away only small
portions at a time, as it would be
easier to remove than to put back an
over scraped portion. Cutting off too
much would cause the soap to break
off into chunks.

5. Add detail to the inside of your


outline to refine the design further.
When the carving is finished, wet
your finger and rub the surface of the
soap to create a smooth finish. Allow
it to dry and harden for a day.
