Universal Relay – CT/VT Module Change Procedure
Prepared by Nathan Stevenson

The family of Universal Relays boasts a modular assembly, allowing users to switch certain modules out for
others with different features, allowing for a completely customizable product.
This document will describe the process of swapping the CT/VT module.

Step 1 – Opening the Front Panel

Before removing/replacing any module, you must first disconnect the relay from its power source.
To open the front panel, unscrew the knob found on the right side of the front panel:

Once it is fully unscrewed, open the front panel until it forms a 90° angle with the rest of the chassis.

Step 2 – Removing CT/VT Module

Each module has two plastic arms that secure the module in place. To disengage the arms, pull them
towards you and up until they are form a 180° angle with the top and bottom surfaces of the module:
Now, remove the CT/VT module from the chassis by pulling on the module’s plastic arms until the module
protrudes far enough from the relay so that you may grip the module’s metal casing to finish removing it.

Step 3 – Inserting New CT/VT Module

Before you insert a new CT/VT module, you must make sure that you have the correct terminal block to
match the features of the module. The 8F, 8L, and 8M modules are the 4CT/4VT modules and require a
terminal block with 8 shorting clips:

The 8N and 8R modules are the 8CT modules and therefore require a terminal block with 16 shorting clips:

You must also make sure that your terminal block matches the white plastic “keys” on your module. For
instance, an 8H CT/VT module has the following key configuration:

The inside of a terminal block that corresponds to this key configuration looks like this:

Once you have the correct terminal block and key code combination, remove the 6 screws attaching the old
terminal block to the back of the UR chassis and remove the block. Attach the new one the same way you
found the old one.
Note that a terminal block’s corresponding module must be removed from the UR before removing the
terminal block. Failing to do this will result in damage to the terminal block.
To insert the new module, ensure that the plastic arms attached the module are raised so that they form a
180° with the top and bottom surfaces of the module. Then, insert the new module into the correct DSP slot
of the UR chassis, ensuring the module’s protruding PCB is lined up with the grooves on the chassis:

When the module becomes flush with the chassis, push the module’s plastic arms down and in towards the
module itself:

The module is fully inserted when the arms click into the plastic holsters on the front face of the module.

Step 4 – Re-Establishing Service

After you have swapped out the CT/VT module, you must update the relay’s order code. On the front of the
relay, this can be found by pressing the MENU button until the “COMMANDS” option appears, the scroll
through using the down arrow until “RELAY MAINTENANCE” appears below “COMMANDS”. Press the right
arrow once, then press the down arrow until “UPDATE ORDER CODE?” appears. Then, using the “VALUE”
arrows on the front panel, change the value from “No” to “Yes”, and press the ENTER button.
This will cause the relay to reboot.

After the reboot has completed, you will likely have to re-program your settings since the relay will now have
different settings options as a result of the new features provided by the new module. You can then re-
establish communication with the relay using the Enervista UR Setup Software and re-read the order code.
You may load settings to the relay. For a relay to accept your settings file, the part number and firmware
version of your relay have to match the part number and firmware version of your settings file.

Once settings have been loaded, the relay should be placed in service mode. This can be done by pressing
the MENU button on the front of the relay until “SETTINGS” appears. Then press the right arrow, ensure that
“PRODUCT SETUP” appears below “SETTINGS”, and press the right arrow again. Scroll down until
“INSTALLATION” appears, and press the right arrow. Using the VALUE arrows, change the RELAY SETTINGS
option from “NOT PROGRAMMED” to “PROGRAMMED” and press the ENTER button. Verify that the IN SERVICE
LED turns green on the front panel. The relay is now ready to be used as normal.
