STATICS
CONCEPTS OF MECHANICS Is the study which deals with the condition of
bodies in equilibrium subjected to external forces.
Deals with the equilibrium of bodies, that is, those
that are either at rest or move with a constant
velocity.

Mechanics is a branch of the physical sciences

that is concerned with the state of rest or DYNAMICS
motion of bodies that are subjected to the Is also a branch of mechanics in which the forces
action of forces. and their effects on the bodies in motion are
studied. Dynamics is sub-divided into two parts:
(1) Kinematics and (2) Kinetics

MECHANICS • Kinematics deals with the geometry of motion

of bodies without and application of external
forces.

• Kinetics deals with the motion of bodies with

STATICS DYNAMICS the application of external forces.

Some Basic Terms Used in Mechanics

SPACE
Any geometric region in which the study of a body has been
done is called space.

PARTICLE
It can be defined as an object which has only mass and no size.
- Such a body cannot exist theoretically.
- When we deal with the problems involving distances
considerably larger compared to the size of the body, the body
may be treated as particle.

RIGID BODY
Considered as a combination of a latge number of particles in
which all the particles remain at a fixed distance from one
another, both before and after applying a load.

Newton’s First Law

▪ A particle originally at rest, or

moving in a straight line with
constant velocity, tends to
remain in this state provided
the particle is not subjected
to an unbalanced force.

F=0

5
DJJ30093 ENGINEERING MECHANICS
Newton’s Second Law

▪ A particle acted upon by an

unbalanced forced F experiences
an acceleration a that has the
same direction as the force and a
magnitude that is directly
proportional to the force. If F is
applied to a particle of mass m, this
law may be expressed
mathematically as,
F = ma
6
DJJ30093 ENGINEERING MECHANICS
Newton’s Third Law

▪ It states that for every action

there is an equal and opposite
reaction.

F action = F reaction
