MOTHERBOARD

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

MOTHER BOARD
The motherboard is the central sub-assembly in the computer. It consists of a flat printed-circuit
board on which is mounted a variety of chips and a few other components. The motherboard contains the
CPU, the support circuitry of the socket for the CPU, the coprocessor, the BIOS chip, several rows of
memory chips and expansion slots.

PARTS OF MOTHERBOARDS AND ITS FUNCTIONS

Back Panel Connectors & Ports-is a connector at the back of a computer where you plug in an external
device such as a printer, keyboards, mouse, scanner, modem and many more.It contains the display ports,
audio ports, USB ports, PS II ports etc. This allows instructions and data to flow between the computer
and the device. The computer port are also commonly referred as the input and output ports.
PCI Express X1 Slots-slot from modern expansion cards such as sound card, network card like wifi,
internet, blutooth. Connector card like USB,fire wire, E-soft and certain low and graphics card.

PCI Express x16 Slot-slot for discreet graphic card and high value with such a tough and solid state
drives.

Northbridge-also known as memory controller hub that allows the CPU to communicate with the RAM
and graphics card. Beginning form the sandy bridge generation of intel CPU, motherboards no longer
have this component as it has been into graded within the CPU itself.
CPU Socket or CPU slot- is a mechanical component that provides mechanical of electrical connection
between the micro processor and the prelim circuit board or PCB. This allows the CPU to be replaced
without soldering.

ATX 12V Power Connector-connects to the four pane power cable of the power supply unit which
supplies power to the CPU.

Front Panel USB & Audio Connetors-connects to USB and audio ports at the front or the top of
computer case.
Front Panel Connectors-connects to the power switch, reset switch, power LED and hard drive LED
have a computer case.

CMOS Battery- supplies power to store bio-settings and keep the real time clock running.

Southbridge-also known as the input or output controller hub or ICH. Chas set that allows the CPU to
communicate with PCI slot, PCI express X1 slot like expansion cards. SATA connectors like hard drives,
optical drives, USB ports like USB devices, inthernet ports and a board audio.
SATA Connectors- connects to modern hard disk drives, solid state drives and optical drives for data
transfer.

Fan Headers-supplies power to the CPU. Keep sink fan and computer case friends.

RAM Slots- are vertical slots. Typically numbering three or four which usually are located at the upper
right corner of motherboard.
ATX Power Connector-connects to the 24 pane ATX power cable of the power supply unit which
supplies power to the motherboard.
