ASSIGNMENT-1

TYPES OF SUPPORT , TRUSS AND CONTINUOUS BEAM

TYPES OF SUPPORTS:
1. FIXED SUPPORT

Fixed supports can resist vertical and horizontal forces as

well as a moment.
Since they restrain both rotation and translation, they are
also known as rigid supports.
This means that a structure only needs one fixed support
in order to be stable.
All three equations of equilibrium can be satisfied.
And in this structure one end is fixed.

TYPES OF SUPPORTS:
2. HINGE SUPPORT

The hinge supports are unable to resist the lateral loads.

They resist only vertical loads that's why it has only one
reaction, this reaction acts perpendicular to the surface
and away from it.
Pinned or hinge support: It resists the horizontal and
vertical loads but is unable to resist the moment.
it only allows the rotation.
and the structure shows that both the ends are hinged

TYPES OF SUPPORTS:
3. ROLLER SUPPORT

The roller supports are unable to resist the lateral loads.

They resist only vertical loads that's why it has only one
reaction, this reaction acts perpendicular to the surface
and away from it.
Pinned or hinge support: It resists the horizontal and
vertical loads but is unable to resist the moment.
Roller supports are free to rotate and translate along the
surface upon which the roller rests.
structure shows 4 rollers supports.

TYPES OF SUPPORTS:
4. GUIDED SUPPORT

Guided is support at the end of the beams that prevent

rotation, but permits longitudinal and transverse
displacement
Free or unsupported is when the beam is totally free to
rotate in any direction
Held is support at the end of the beam that prevents
longitudinal and transverse displacement.
eg: train and rails
eg: window of bus

CONTINUOUS BEAM

A continuous beam, i.e. a beam that has more than

two supports, is statically indeterminate.
The reactions in the supports of a continuous beam
cannot be obtained with the equations of static
equilibrium only.
For the calculation of the reactions in the supports
each section is considered as an independent beam.
The action of the adjacent part is substituted by a
moment in the support between the sections.
The equation for determining these moments is
known as the theorem of three moments.
