Course Content: Corrosion is the destructive attack of a metal by its reaction with
environment. Thus, corrosion refers to the degradation of a metal by its
environment. The course content include: Fundamentals of electrochemical
thermodynamics and kinetics pertinent to corrosion processes; Forms of
corrosion such as pitting, stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement;
corrosion inhibition; coating; passivity; anodic and cathodic protection.
Contemporary and emerging corrosion problems and trends in the Oil and
Gas, Desalination, Nuclear, Chemical and Petrochemical industry.

Objective: The main objective of this course is to introduce graduate students to the
principles and theories of corrosion science and engineering. Students will
be able to identify different forms of corrosion, understand the
thermodynamics/kinetics of corrosion, corrosion measurements, how to
control and if possible prevent corrosion. In addition students will be
exposed to topics of industrial importance such as corrosion inhibition,
coatings, passivity, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement and
cathodic protection. Challenges facing today’s Corrosion Engineers will be
elucidated.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, Students will be able to:
1. Know the cost of corrosion and its consequences.
2. Understand the fundamental concepts of corrosion: electrochemical
kinetics and thermodynamics.
3. Identify and recognize the common forms of corrosion such as general
corrosion, pitting corrosion, stress corrosion and hydrogen
embrittlement.
4. Understand the concept of passivity.
5. Understand the various techniques of corrosion measurement and
monitoring.
6. Understand the various methods of corrosion mitigation.
7. Understand contemporary and emerging corrosion problems and trends
in the Oil and Gas, Desalination, Nuclear, Chemical and Petrochemical
industry.
