INT. COUNSELLING ROOM 1
(Dark room lit with dim soft
lights with two couches,
PROTAGONIST on one,
COUNSELLOR on the other)
PROTAGONIST
I can see your number.
COUNSELLOR
What do you mean by ’my number’?
PROTAGONIST
What type of counsellor are you?
Can’t you read my mind?
(COUNSELLOR laughs and
shakes his head)
PROTAGONIST
Everyone has a number. Luckily
nobody knows about these numbers
or they would think I’m crazy and
laugh at me. I don’t really need
another reason for people to
laugh at me. Being in high school
is hard, especially when you are
being bullied as much as I am.

BEGIN FLASHBACK

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY 2

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
Normally my day starts off with
being yelled at by a 2 and his
girlfriend, 3.
(POV SHOT)PROTAGONIST is being yelled at by a fellow
classmate (who has a green 2 above his head) and his
girlfriend (who has a green 3 above her head). PROTAGONIST
walks away and does not seem phased.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
They don’t bother me that much,
the others do. The 4’s. They
bother me.

INT. BATHROOM 3

Birds eye view of a toilet stall, door swings open

quickly. PROTAGONIST gets pushed into a toilet stall by
four bullies (all with dark yellow fours above their
head).
2.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
They LOVE to yell at me, take my
money, they even pushed my head
down a toilet.

(POV Shot)PROTAGONIST tries to get away but two of the

bullies grab his head and holds him down into the toilet.
(Underwater, Laughing Sounds)
Cuts to shot of a few minutes later, PROTAGONIST has his
face on the closed toilet seat. He is panting and trying
to get his breath back, obviously humiliated & almost
crying.

PROTAGONIST
(Emotional since remembering
of the toilet moment)
Do you understand now?
COUNSELLOR
No, not really. It’s not like I
or anyone else can see these
numbers that you’re talking
about. Since when could you see
these numbers?

PROTAGONIST
I was a little boy when it
started.
BEGIN FLASHBACK

EXT. PLAYGROUND 5
YOUNG PROTAGONIST sitting on park bench eating a chocolate
bar.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I was waiting for my friends at
the playground one day and I was
eating a chocolate bar.
YOUNG PROTAGONIST drops wrapper and it starts to catch in
the wind and blow away.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I dropped my wrapper and it
started to blow away. An old lady
saw this.
3.

OLD LADY sees wrapper start to blow away.

OLD LADY
(Angry)
Don’t you have any respect? Pick
that up!
YOUNG PROTAGONIST ignores OLD LADY.
OLD LADY
(Screaming)
Fine! Have it your way! If you
litter the earth, I’ll litter
your mind!
OLD LADY leaves angrily. YOUNG Protagonist’s FRIENDS show
up with a soccer ball. YOUNG PROTAGONIST watches the
wrapper blows away while walking up to meet his friends.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I was confused but I didn’t
really think much of it, until
the next day.

INT. PROTAGONIST’S HOUSE 6

(POV Shot) YOUNG PROTAGONIST walks and sits down at the

dinner table to see his MUM eating breakfast. and notices
she has a cyan 2 above her head.
YOUNG PROTAGONIST has a puzzled look on his face.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
The next day, I noticed that my
mum had a two above her head. I
wasn’t sure what it meant but I
did know that this was strange.
It did feel like it was meant to
be there though.
YOUNG PROTAGONIST thinks about this but realizes it’s okay
and walks off frame.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY 7

PROTAGONIST walks through hallway and notices people have
numbers on top of their heads. Whip pans of people with
1’s, a teacher with a 5 & bullies with 4’s

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
As I went through school that
day, I noticed everyone had these
numbers.
4.

INT. BATHROOM 8
PROTAGONIST looks into mirror and can’t see any numbers.
Appears frustrated.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I could never see a number above
my own head in reflections or
anything like that, much to my
frustration.

INT. PROTAGONIST’S HOUSE 9

PROTAGONIST sits on couch watching TV. Watches news and
sees Prime Minister & US President with an 8 above his
head.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I noticed that powerful people
tended to have quite high
numbers. The prime minister had a
7, US President a 8.
PROTAGONIST flicks between channels. Watches old
documentary/montage of Hitler & Stalin (with 9 above their
heads)

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
The only 10s I’ve ever seen are
on old videos, like Hitler or
Stalin. The sorts of people who
are responsible for mass genocide
and similar atrocities.
END FLASHBACK

INT. COUNSELLING ROOM 10

PROTAGONIST
Eventually, after having thought
about this for a few weeks, I
concluded that the number
corresponded to danger. The
numbers, as far as I can tell
represent how dangerous someone
has the potential to be on a
scale of one to ten.
BEGIN FLASHBACK
5.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY 11

PROTAGONIST (sitting down on edge of hallway) observes
people walking past with different numbers on top of their
head.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
The numbers of a person
broadcasted how dangerous they
were to those around them.
Broadcasting, at least, to me.
PROTAGONIST POV zooms in on a big football player (with an
2 on his head) with a smaller kid (with a 3 on his head)
next to him.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
Interestingly enough, Danger is
not quantified by how much harm
one could cause others, but by
how much harm one intends to
cause others. That’s why two
people of the same height,
weight, and muscle mass could be
unequally dangerous. That’s why
my best friend, the huge, 2 meter
tall, football player isn’t
dangerous at all. He simply
doesn’t intend to harm others.
But the smaller guy? He would be
more likely to harm, maybe even
kill, in a heartbeat.

END FLASHBACK

INT. COUNSELLING ROOM 12

PROTAGONIST
(Reflective)
Most people don’t realize
how much danger surrounds
them every day. It takes so
little, to do so much
damage.

COUNSELLOR
That’s a great story but let’s
talk about why you’re actually
here today. Talk me through what
happened?

BEGIN FLASHBACK
6.

INT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM 13

PROTAGONIST is sitting (leaning back and forth on a chair)
in classroom doing work. He looks up and sees a new kid
getting a tour around the school.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
One day, a new kid came to
school. Suddenly I felt this
oppressive fear.

He looks up to see that (POV shot) the new kid has a dark
red 10 above his head.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I sensed something - something
terrible - but I didn’t want it
to be true. He was a ten.
PROTAGONIST watches MACKIE standing there, and MACKIE
stares back at him. A stare-off takes place. MACKIE’s face
is screaming a hot, burning ten.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
Just a number to some, but to me,
it was something terrifying. I
could sense some serious danger.
So much danger that I passed out.
PROTAGONIST goes pale and falls backwards off his chair.
END FLASHBACK

INT. COUNSELLING ROOM 14

PROTAGONIST
When I woke up, I realized I had
never seen someone with a number
over 6. I think it was a trained
solider I met at an ANZAC Day
Service. So seeing a 10 in the
flesh was full on.
BEGIN FLASHBACK

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY 15

PROTAGONIST walks down hallway and sees MACKIE surrounded
with heaps of people joking and laughing.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
The next day, I came back to
school and the new kid, called
Mackie, was the most popular guy
in school.
7.

INT. SCHOOL CLASSROOM 16

PROTAGONIST is sitting down in class when MACKIE walks in
and sits down across from him.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I started my day with a maths
class. It was my first class with
Mackie so I cautiously started
looking around the room,
wondering if I could make it out
the window before the bullets
started flying.
MACKIE pulls a pencil out of his bag. PROTAGONIST is
tense.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
But he sat down just like any
other lad and the most deadly
thing to come out of his backpack
was a pencil.

MACKIE works away. PROTAGONIST stares at him and tries to

’work him out’.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
Mackie was in my year but he was
a bit smaller than me. He wasn’t
noticeably scary or dangerous to
other people. He looked sad most
of the time, maybe even
depressed. Now I had to work out
what made him get a ’10’ Danger
rating.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY 17

MACKIE walks down the hallway alone. PROTAGONIST is
sitting on the floor on the side of the hallway.
PROTAGONIST is visibly uneasy when he sees MACKIE and the
10 floating above him.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
Weeks passed and I didn’t bother
him and he didn’t bother me. I
saw him from time to time in the
halls and the alarm in my head
shot off again and again. I
cramped up in my stomach whenever
I saw him, but he made friends
easy enough and that started to
make me doubt the number above
his head. Maybe my ability was
wrong.

MACKIE walks up to PROTAGONIST.

8.

MACKIE
"Hey, I’m Mackie, and I couldn’t
help but notice that you always
seem to walk away whenever I’m in
the room? Did I upset you or
something?”
MACKIE puts out his hand for a handshake. PROTAGONIST is
sitting on the floor still and looks upwardly terrified of
his hand.

MACKIE
(Almost sarcastically)
"Hey, now, I’m not gonna hurt
you"

MACKIE starts to grin.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I wasn’t buying it. Everyone else
loved him but I was that weird
guy who always over analyzes
everything. Seeing numbers didn’t
help with that.
(POV Shot) PROTAGONIST looks at his hand and looks up his
body, to his face and finally to the number 10 floating
over his head.
PROTAGONIST cautiously outstretches his hand.
PROTAGONIST
(clears throat)
Protagonist.
MACKIE’s smile gets slightly creepier.
Close up of hands shaking.
PROTAGONIST ’gets shocked’ as soon as their hands shake
and yanks his arm back’.
As a result of this, PROTAGONIST looks into his bag which
is on the floor and sees a gun like object.
MACKIE quickly picks up his bag and MACKIE’s smile turns
into a even creepier grin.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I thought I saw a gun. I saw the
glint in his eyes, and I felt
true terror for the first time in
my life.

Birds-eye Montage of PROTAGONIST in room freaking out.

Tossing and turning in bed. Jump cuts to ’scary moments’
with noise/static in between.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
As the weeks turned to months,
the terror of seeing him and the
ten increased and I started to
panic even more. I had to take
matters into my own hands.
What could I do though? I
couldn’t just go up to him and be
like "I can sense danger and you

idly by as this kid roamed
through school. I couldn’t tell
anyone though, no one would
believe it.
PROTAGONIST sits up. Flashes of Hitler with a ten above
his head, flashes to similar shot’s of MACKIE.
10.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
If you had the chance to kill
Hitler before he did anything
wrong, would you? I made my
decision.

PROTAGONIST loads gun (gun loading sound) and slips it

into his school bag.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I loaded Dad’s gun, I couldn’t
let him live.

INT. SCHOOL AUDITIORIUM FOYER 20

Crowded foyer. Steadicam shot of Protagonist’s feet moving

up to over his shoulder as he navigates the crowd. He
tries to follow and catch MACKIE.
PROTAGONIST catches MACKIE, grabs his arm and pulls him
into the bathroom.

INT. SCHOOL BATHROOM 21

PROTAGONIST pushes MACKIE up against the wall. MACKIE
looks up at him open mouthed while muttering something to
himself. PROTAGONIST looks afraid.
PROTAGONIST
(Best try-hard angry voice)
Who really are you?

MACKIE starts to pull out a gun from his jumper but with
one quick step PROTAGONIST closes flicks the gun out of
his hand and let’s it drops to the floor. PROTAGONIST pins
him against the wall again holding his collar up. MACKIE
has terror in his eyes.

PROTAGONIST
"I’m going to take my hand away
from your face now and you are
going to answer some questions.
Understand?"

MACKIE nods the best he can with PROTAGONIST’s hand

holding him tightly against the wall.
PROTAGONIST slowly takes his hand off MACKIE’s mouth and
MACKIE takes a wavering breath, almost looking like he is
about to cry. PROTAGONIST feels out of character but tries
to pump himself back up.
MACKIE starts shaking uncontrollably and muttering
something over and over again while staring at PROTAGOINST
with a look of fear and incomprehension. PROTAGONIST
breathes in to speak, but MACKIE cuts him off.
11.

PROTAGONIST opens his mouth to speak but MACKIE cuts

him off.
MACKIE
I can see the numbers in your
eyes. You’re like me.
PROTAGONIST appears shattered.
PROTAGONIST
(Fearful)
"What did you say?"
MACKIE takes a tentative step away from the wall.
PROTAGONIST looks into MACKIE’s eyes and sees a flicker in
his iris which is so faint you’d miss it if you weren’t
looking for it.
PROTAGONIST
(Whispering to himself)
Numbers

PROTAGONIST takes a step forward to look closer but MACKIE

ducks out of the way and picks up his gun off the floor.
MACKIE points the gun straight and PROTAGONIST ready to
pull the trigger

MACKIE
(Yelling)
There can only be one of us.
PROTAGONIST quickly tackles MACKIE to the ground,
resulting in MACKIE dropping his gun again. PROTAGONIST
lands two punches to MACKIE’s face, while pinning him
against the floor. PROTAGONIST picked up MACKIE’s gun, and
shoots him in the face. Blood pours everywhere.
PROTAGONIST sits crying in a puddle of blood shocked. He
is shaking.
PROTAGONIST
I had nowhere I could go. I
freaked out. I had no idea what
way was up. I tried to collect
myself and figure out what the
heck I was supposed to do. I was
scared. I was angry. I was livid.
And through the tears I saw the
stained bathroom mirror shattered
on the floor.

PROTAGONIST picks up the largest shard of glass and looked

at himself. Floating right above his own head he sees a
10.
12.

PROTAGONIST (V.O)
I did what I did to save others.
PROTAGONIST looks in the mirror against the wall and sees
his body in full sight.
PROTAGONIST (V.O)
He was a ten. Now I am a ten. I
couldn’t live with him, now I
can’t live with myself. That’s
the price I have to pay.

INT. SCHOOL AUDITIORIUM FOYER 18

Crowded foyer. Steadicam shot of Protagonist’s feet moving
up to over his shoulder as he navigates the crowd. He
tries to follow and catch TEN.

PROTAGONIST catches TEN, grabs his arm and pulls him into
the bathroom.

INT. SCHOOL BATHROOM 19

PROTAGONIST pushes TEN up against the wall. TEN looks up

at him open mouthed while muttering something to himself.
PROTAGONIST looks afraid.
PROTAGONIST
(Best try-hard angry voice,
slowly)
Who are you?
TEN starts to pull out a gun from his jumper but with one
quick step PROTAGONIST closes flicks the gun out of TEN’s
hand and let’s it drops to the floor. PROTAGONIST pins him
against the wall again holding his collar up. TEN has
terror in his eyes.
PROTAGONIST
I’m going to let you down now and
you are going to answer some
questions. Understand?
TEN nods the best he can with PROTAGONIST’s hand holding
him tightly against the wall.

PROTAGONIST slowly takes his hand off TEN’s mouth and TEN
takes a wavering breath, almost looking like he is about
to cry. PROTAGONIST feels out of character but tries to
pump himself back up.
TEN starts shaking uncontrollably and muttering something
over and over again while staring at PROTAGOINST with a
look of fear and incomprehension. PROTAGONIST breathes in
to speak, but TEN cuts him off.
PROTAGONIST opens his mouth to speak but TEN cuts him off.

TEN
You’re a ten.
PROTAGONIST appears shattered.
10.

PROTAGONIST
(Fearful)
What did you say?

TEN takes a tentative step away from the wall.

PROTAGONIST looks into TEN’s eyes and sees a flicker in
his iris which is so faint you’d miss it if you weren’t
looking for it.

PROTAGONIST
(Whispering to himself)
You see numbers....
PROTAGONIST takes a step forward to look closer but TEN
ducks out of the way and picks up his gun off the floor.

TEN points the gun straight and is ready to pull the

trigger at PROTAGONIST.
TEN
(Yelling)
It’s my duty to protect everyone
and you’re in the way.
TEN manages to get one shot away resulting a mirror
shattering. PROTAGONIST quickly tackles TEN to the ground,
resulting in TEN dropping his gun again. PROTAGONIST lands
two punches to TEN’s face, while pinning him against the
floor. PROTAGONIST picked up TEN’s gun, and shoots him.
Blood pours everywhere.
PROTAGONIST sits crying in a puddle of blood shocked. He
is shaking. PROTAGONIST picks up the largest shard of
glass and looked at himself. Floating right above his own
head he sees a 10.
