SBF3043 Animal and Plant Physiology

Instruction for Practical

Learning outcome
Conduct experiments scientifically to investigate a hypothesis.

Instructions
1. You will be given 2 practical manuals: one is related to animal physiology, and
another one is related to plant physiology.
2. It’s compulsory for you to conduct both experiments.
3. Setup the experiments based on the manual given.
4. You are required to record a video throughout the experiments, starting from the
setup process till the end of the observation stage.
5. You may perform the experiments between:
a. Week 5 – 7 for Experiment 1.
b. Week 10 – 12 for Experiment 2.

Video
1. The length of the video is 5 minutes maximum each.
2. You yourself have to be in the video explaining everything about the experiments.
3. Your video should include:
a. Title
b. Name and matric number
c. Objectives
d. Introduction
e. Hypotheses
f. Materials and Methods – you have to clearly show all the steps in the video
g. Results
h. Discussion
i. Conclusion
j. References
4. Deadline of the video (or the link to your video) submissions:
a. Friday Week 7 (3 December 2021) for Experiment 1.
b. Friday Week 12 (14 January 2021) for Experiment 2.
5. Please refer to the rubric below for more information on the marking scheme.

Experiment 1
Respiration

Rate of respiration

OBJECTIVE

Identify the effect of water temperature on the respiration rate of a fish

MATERIALS
Beaker (100 ml)
2 small fishes

PROCEDURES
1. Fill a beaker with 200 ml of tap water (normal temperature) and place a fish in the
beaker.
2. Observe and record the number of breaths every minute. You can determine the
number of breaths by counting the number of times the fish opens and closes its
mouth or the number of times the operculum contract. You have to do the observation
for 5 minutes.
3. Repeat step 1-2 using 200 ml of water from fridge (cold water).

RESULTS
Treatment Number of breaths in 5 minutes
Normal temperature
Cold water

DISCUSSION
1. How does water temperature affect the respiration rate of fish?
2. Beside temperature, concentration of oxygen is another factor that could affect the
rate of respiration in fish. Discuss this statement.
