Executive Summary

This report will do accelerated life testing analysis of paper clip bending test at 90

Degree and 180 Degree. The Paper clip bends until it breaks for both angles. The

Failure Cycle is recorded for both data sets. Here, We are going to analyze

accelerated life testing using Minitab. The Relationship between the Failure cycle

and angle of bend (Stress) is obtained from the Regression Equation. From the

Probability Plot, we can observe and analyze the distribution of the given data points,

which are recorded for both the data sets. At the same time, the Relationship plot

represents the relationship between the failure cycle and the angle of bend.

INTRODUCTION

Accelerated life testing is the testing method of different products at various

conditions such as stress, strain, voltage, temperature, vibration, pressure, etc. This

test uncovers the faults and potential modes of failure in a short period. By analyzing

such tests, engineers predict the service life of the product and maintenance interval

of the product. Due to such testing methods, there is a delay in the product launch of

such a product. Generally, testing methods are employed to evaluate the failure rate

at normal working conditions. Thus, accelerated life testing methods are developed

to reduce the testing time.

To perform this test on products or components, there are some procedures or

instructions. The results and observation is collected and documented. ALT methods

can be qualitative or quantitative. The qualitative method is used to reveal the

probable failure of the product so that the product engineer can improve the product

design. Whereas the quantitative is designed to produce data required for the

accelerated life testing. In ALT, qualitative is always done before quantitative. This

accelerated life testing is costlier than conventional life testing because it runs within

minimum iterations.
PART – A Non-repairable Devices – Reliability

Assessment

A computer component life test of four randomly selected modems had

failure times of 1.2, 2.7, 3.4, and 5.1 years

1. Create a Weibull Probability Plot

2. Determine when 25% of the population will fail.

From the above Weibull Probability Plot, 25% of the population will fail at

2.089 years.
3. Determine the shape and scale parameters of the distribution.

From the above table, the shape parameter is 2.40532 while the scale

parameter is 3.50647.

4. State the most likely failure mode (i.e., early-life, intrinsic, or

wear-out) and explain your reasoning.

Here, Wear-out is the most likely failure mode. As the use of

computer components increases, the failure rate of components also

increases.

Therefore the parameter estimation is greater than 1.

PART – B ACCELERATED LIFE TESTING
The above Analysis depicts the regression table for the Relationship between the

failure cycle and the angle of the bend, which will assume stress.

Here is the regression equation of the paper clip bend test analysis at 90- and 180-

degree Data set.

Failure Cycle = 18.7667-2.54131(STRESS)+4.04990(SHAPE)

The above Probability Plot is of data of the paper clip bend test at 90-Degree and

180-Degree. Whereas, from the plot, we can say that most of the data points of both

sets touch the Diagonal line.

The above table shows that the assumed cycle for paper clip bend stress at 45-

Degree is 8121 bends.

The relationship plot above represents the appropriation of the failure cycle for each

point of twist (or stress).

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the accelerated life testing of paper clip determines the mean time

failure of 8121 bends at 45 Degree stress, in the previous assignment of the

conventional life testing the MTTF of Weibull distribution. Thus the Accelerated life

testing is twice the traditional life testing method. ALT test is performed under

extreme conditions and a relatively shorter duration than conventional life testing

methods. In ALT testing, bending angles is 90 and 180 degree which is more

significant than 45 degrees. Therefore, there is a significant deviation.
