WHAT IS FULL VOLTAGE STARTER?

o Full-voltage starters, also referred to as across-the-line starters or direct-on-line (DOL) starters,

are full-voltage non-reversing (FVNR) and connect the motor to a power line. Manual starters
are limited to single-phase motors through about 5 HP at 320 VAC and three-phase through 10
HP at 460 and 575 VAC.

ADVANTAGES
o Reduced Voltage Starters enable the AC induction motor to speed up in smaller, resulting in
less current drawn than with a traditional motor starter. Due to decreased voltage, torque is
also reduced resulting in a soft, or easy start. Reduced Voltage Starters are used on all types
of AC and DC motors.

o It provides a linear power slope for smooth acceleration, which reduces inrush currents and
excessive wear on mechanical driven components. The starter has a provision to adjust the
starting voltage and acceleration time. This can be chosen to suit specific applications.

DISADVANTAGES

o Low Starting Torque (Torque = (Square of Voltage) is also reduce). Six Terminal Motor
Required (Delta Connected). It requires 2 set of cables from starter to motor.

o Slope overload distortion. Granular or idle noise. High bit rate.

WHAT IS REDUCING VOLTAGE STARTER?

o What is a Reduced Voltage Starter? Reduced Voltage Starter is a device that starts motors
with reduced power supplied at start-up. Reducing the power reduces potentially damaging
electrical and mechanical shocks on the system. ... Electric motors consume 60% to 70% of all
energy used in the United States.

ADVANTAGES

o A reduced voltage soft starter protects your electrical motors from overloads, preventing the
motor from drawing too much current and thus the overheating and damage that this excess
current provides.

o Reduced voltage starters are devices that start motors by reducing the power supplied at start-
up. Reducing the power in turn reduces potentially damaging electrical and mechanical shocks
on the system.
DISADVANTAGES

o can create power surges that may stress your company's power distribution system, especially if
you have a lot of motors on that system. These can cause unwanted power surges, brownouts
which may damage other sensitive electrical equipment such as computers.

o lower inrush current (33%), the lower voltage (58%) and lower starting torque (33%) advantages,
we must also keep in mind that some loads simply cannot be started with these lower values. For
instance, if a specific load requires at least 50% of the motor's full-load torque.
