Growth Requirements

The silver poplar tree grows best in open areas where the tree will receive full exposure
to sunlight throughout the day. You can grow silver poplar successfully in most soil
types with a pH rating between 6 and 8. Silver poplar does not grow well in wet areas
where the soil is regularly soaked with water. Compared to other species of poplar, the
silver poplar is more tolerant of dry growing conditions and can grow in areas where
the tree is exposed to salt spray and other areas with high soil salinity.

Pests and Diseases

There are a number of pests and diseases that can damage silver poplar trees. Some
common diseases that can affect silver poplar include leaf spots, cankers on stems or
branches, and leaf rust. The main insect pests of silver poplar are the carpenterworm
and poplar borer. These boring insects can cause serious cosmetic damage to your
trees and make it more susceptible to other diseases.

Considerations
The root systems of silver poplar trees are aggressive and can cause problems if they
are planted in the wrong location. The roots of silver poplars can clog drains and septic
leach fields, and they may penetrate the foundations of buildings. Avoid planting silver
poplars within 100 feet of a building. The roots of silver poplar also produce suckers
that can spread the tree into the surrounding area, forming a thicket of silver poplars.
Silver poplar trees also drop stems, leaves, seeds and flowers throughout the year and
can produce a significant amount of litter on the ground around the tree. The limbs of
silver poplars are relatively brittle and can break under heavy winds or a load of snow.

The swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) is a medium-sized deciduous tree that sports
bright copper and red hues in the fall. The rounded foliage of the swamp white oak
spreads from a straight central trunk on numerous branches. Immature swamp white
oak trees grow taller than wider, and have an oval growth habit. Mature trees produce
spreading foliage that can provide heavy shade over a significant area. This tree is
adapted to grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 3 through 8.
