OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Identify and differentiate the various models of communication;

b. create one’s own model of communication; and


c. show creativity and cooperation in individual or group activities.
CONCEPTS Models of Communication

Each representation makes us understand how the communication flows because we


see it through graphs, lines, shapes and drawings. These representations are the
models of communication that makes us understand what component comes first
when we are communicating.

Four Types of Communication Models

1. Linear Model of Communication


Features:
 Also called Aristotelian Model of Communication or Box and Arrow
Model of Communication
 The earliest model of communication
 One way communication
 Used for Mass Communication
 It contains the speaker, message (speech), and listener (audience)

2. Interactive Model of Communication


Features:
 Also called saw tooth model of communication.
 Proposed Janet Beavin,Paul Watz Lawich and Don Jackson (1967)
 In contrast with the linear model of communication, interactive model of
communication has the feedback and interference (external and internal) as
its components.

3. Social-Cultural Model of Communication


Features:
 This model stresses the strong influence of social and cultural elements like
customs, traditions, beliefs, attitudes, clothing styles or thinking patterns on a
group of people communicating with one another.

4. Transactional Model of Communication


Features:
 Also called cyclical or spiral model
 Has strong similarities with the interactive model of communication when it
comes to components.
 Transactional model of communication is different when it comes to its
emphasis on message because it happens almost simultaneously during the
exchange of ideas.

QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY
1. What are the four models of communication that we discussed? In what way are they
similar when it comes to components? How are they different?
2. Choose one model of communication. What are its advantages? Disadvantages?
3. Which communication models you consider the best? Why?

APPLICATION what would be its name? Take a picture of your drawing and explain why you represent the
communication that way. (100 pts.)

Originality: 25 pts.
Labels: 20 pts.
Neatness: 15 pts.
