BEACH POLLUTION AND THE WWF

Australia is an island with beautiful beaches. In Sydney there are about 70 beaches, including the
famous Bondi Beach. Some of the beaches have got big nets because there are sharks in the
water. The beaches are safe but there is a serious problem: rubbish. There are broken bottles and
plastic bags on the sand. This is unpleasant and dangerous for people on the beach. There are
plastic bags in the water, too. This is dangerous for the animals in the water. Plastic kills about
100,000 marine animals every year in the world-not only fish and birds, but mammals like dolphin
and seals, too. Sometimes the animals eat the plastic or they get trapped inside it. When an animal
dies by eating plastic, its body decomposes before the plastic, so the plastic goes back into the
water and can kill again. This plastic often comes from our streets. The wind blows it into the sea.
In Australia there is also the Great Barrier Reef that is in the north of the country where is in the
Coral Sea. It’s a natural wall of coral. The Coral is dying because of climate change. We will lose
these beautiful part of the Australian coast, if we don’t stop pollution now.

The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) protects animals and their environments. The symbol of the WWF
is the panda, but it protects all animals. People think that the WWF works only in countries where
there are polar bears, tigers, rhinos and other big animals. This is not true, there are WWF projects
all over the world helping different types of animals. In Scotland, for example, it works to protect
the fish, seals, whales and corals around the Scottish coasts. The WWF also has special projects for
endangered animals. Endangered animals in the English-speaking world include the polar bear in
Canada, the bison in America, the grass snake in England and the blue whale in Australia. To save
these animals the WWF must fight pollution and climate change.
