DRAINAGE DESIGN

Having selected the design storm, as shown in section xx, rainfall-runoff modelling and drainage design
was done using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Storm Water Management Model
(SWMM) Version 5.1.

The runoff component of SWMM operates on a collection of sub-catchment areas that receive
precipitation and generate runoff. The routing portion of SWMM transports this runoff through a system
of pipes and channels. SWMM tracks the quantity of runoff generated within each sub-catchment, and
the flow rate and flow depth of water in each pipe and channel during a simulation period.

The catchment for the proposed road is represented as a series of sub-catchments as shown in Figure xx.
Flow routing is done using the Kinematic Wave Equation whereas infiltration is modelled using the
Modified Green-Ampt method in the SWMM model.
