Strategies for Selecting a Research Topic
By Govind Raj Adhikari

Frequently the struggle to make a research paper, especially for us students, is primarily the
selection of the topic. Once you chose the topic the research part comes fluently. The article
proposes strategies so that picking a topic would no longer be a headache.
As the first step, the article presents the different scenarios of selecting the topic; when the topic
is already given by a Ph. D program or a company, when the supervisor recommends topics he
knows about, and when the topic has to be selected by oneself. The research topic has to be
innovative, authentic, and improved, but how can we find a topic that suits all that? In order to
achieve that, techniques are presented like reviewing articles published in scholarly journals,
investigating on trustworthy websites, showing up to conferences or seminars to get ideas,
reaching out to students or teachers for suggestions, and using a mind map and brainstorming as
supports. Keeping in mind that the chosen topic has to be interesting and inspiring to the
researcher
The suggested framework FRIENDS can be very useful when selecting a topic because it
contains all important aspects to be considered when choosing a research topic. An aspect that
has to be accomplished is a precise topic. The problem of having a general topic is that the
researcher will not be able to cover all factors due to the limitations of time and resources. The
topic can’t be too general, it would be appropriate for it to be focus on a specific aspect. The
research topic should also be useful to solve a problem in the field or should be relevant to
society. Another factor to be considered is that the researcher plans the financial aspect,
equipment, and how the data is being collected if it’s going to be by interviews, surveys, and
laboratory or field experiments
Through this process, the researcher may need the guidance of a supervisor. The best choice is
having a supervisor with high involvement considered as mentoring, next is coaching where the
supervisor involvement is less since the researcher can effectively work independently. In
apprenticeship, the researcher is not capable of working on its own without the supervisor
therefore is not the best choice. As in unadvisable where the supervisor has minimum
involvement
The acronym FRIENDS determines the characteristics required to generate ideas effectively and
transform them into research topics. Those characteristics are feasible, relevant, interesting,
ethical, narrow, discipline and supervisor. They all are broken down through the article being a
handy and practical resource for future research papers.
