United States Railroads

The first railroads were in England and spread throughout Europe, built in short distances and in
level lines which the engineers thought as the only way the system would work. These locomotives
could not pull heavy loads up hills as believed by the engineers. Americans, however, proved otherwise
and designed their locomotives to travel over high hills and mountains with loads to pull, equipped also
with cowcatchers and cab for protection. Railroads were built using switchbacks along with cuts and
tunnels. These made the United States the railroad leader of the world.
