A marine engineer is a professional who has studied marine engineering (sometimes referred to
as marine engineering) and is responsible for the service, maintenance and repair on board a ship of all
large mechanical and engineered equipment. They design, construct, build, install, inspect and maintain
propulsion systems, engines, pumps and other technical equipment for the effective functioning of
boats and other maritime vessels. From ferries, container ships and hovercraft to cruise liners and
military vessels, such as frigates, warships and submarines, these guys operate on all sorts of ships.
There are many mechanical systems that assist in any vessel's operations, such as propulsion mechanics,
control and power generation systems, lubrication, fuel systems, distillation of water, lighting and air
conditioning systems, etc. The Marine Engineering Bachelor of Science is a four-year degree program
focusing on the design, service and maintenance of various types of marine vessels. Marine engineering
is a branch of engineering that deals with the construction and operation of seagoing craft, docks, and
port facilities for mechanical equipment.

Some of the significant duties performed by individuals who have done marine engineering (maritime
engineering) are:

 Mechanical systems control and maintenance-Specific machinery and systems are assigned to
the engineers of each rank on board ship for maintenance and monitoring purposes.
 Machinery systems are split between all engineers and it is the responsibility of each engineer to
guarantee that his/her equipment is working at all times. It is also required for marine engineers
to look after the machinery on deck.
 Proper record-keeping and planning maintenance – The engine room department operates as a
team to ensure that the scheduled repair system completes the maintenance of all machinery
systems. For official paperwork and filing, accurate record-keeping of different criteria is carried
out.
 Fuel oil bunkering – Marine engineers also perform the fuel oil transfer from a bunker station or
barge to the ship. It is normally the responsibility of the fourth engineer, who also takes daily
fuel oil tank soundings and sends them to the chief engineer for bunkering planning operations.
 Emergency breakdown and repair – The marine engineering study also teaches how to deal with
serious maintenance and failure at sea of machinery systems. While marine engineers are very
capable of doing the same, there are times when experts may be needed. In such situations,
marine engineers are expected to work to fix and address the problem with the experts.

Apart from the above-mentioned duties, a marine engineer on ships is required to follow all the
instructions of the chief engineer, the head of the engine room department on the ship.

engineering degree course (after pursuing required supplementary courses). A recent graduate of
marine engineering will enter a ship for a six-month working contract as a trainee or junior engineer. An
organization would give the third engineer a promotion after obtaining a reasonable amount of
experience and on the basis of results. On completion of the necessary sea time as a third engineer, to
become a second engineer, one may offer Class II tests. Similarly, a second engineer may offer a Class I
examination to get promotion as chief engineer upon completion of the requisite sea time and gaining a
good amount of experience. Do remember that even though the marine engineer has the experience
and credential, the promotion will depend exclusively on the company's decision.
