PHYS-2200 Midterm2 Fall 2021

Nov 19, 2021

Total points = 100. Please upload your answers to Blackboard by 12:30pm.

Advice: Read each question carefully first (maybe twice). What is being asked may be
much simpler than you thought. There should not be any complicated calculations.

1. (20 points) A rectangular loop MNPQ (MN = 1 m, NP = 2 m) is partially inside a magnetic field
of 0.6 T. The total resistance of the loop is 0.5 Ω. Calculate the force F required to pull the loop
to the right at a constant velocity of 3 m/s. Ignore gravity.

2. (20 points) Two concentric cylindrical surface conductors carry currents in the opposite
directions (the current is homogenously distributed on the inner surface of radius 𝑟! and on the
outer surface of radius 𝑟" ). Calculate the magnetic field for (i) 𝑟 < 𝑟! , (ii) 𝑟! < 𝑟 < 𝑟" , and (iii)
𝑟 > 𝑟" ? (Don’t forget to indicate the direction of magnetic field.)
3. (20 points) In the circuit below, the battery and inductor have negligible resistance. The
switch has been open for a long time. What are the currents 𝐼! , 𝐼" , 𝐼# at the moment (a) the
switch is closed, (b) a long time after the switch is closed. Express your answers in terms of 𝑅! ,
𝑅" , 𝐼! , and 𝐿.

4. (40 points) A very long conductive cylindrical pipe has length 𝐿, an inner radius 𝑟! , and outer
radius 𝑟" . 𝐿 ≫ 𝑟" so you can ignore “end-effects”. Charge +Q is released on the inside of the
cylinder by briefly touching the inner surface with a charged object.
(Please provide your reasons for the following questions. You will lose credit if did not show
how you get the answers.)

(a) (8 points) How will this charge +Q distribute? Discuss how much of the charge will be on the
inner surface, regions 𝑟! < 𝑟 < 𝑟" , and on the outer surface.

(b) (16 points) What is the 𝐸*⃗ field in the regions (i) 𝑟 < 𝑟! , (ii) 𝑟! < 𝑟 < 𝑟" , and (iii) 𝑟 > 𝑟" ?
(c) (8 points) What is the potential difference between the axis of the cylinder and the outer
surface?
(d) (8 points) Now (after the charge +Q is released on the inside) place a dielectric core (K=3,
radius 𝑟! ) in the hollow part of the cylinder. Compared to your answers in (b), how is the 𝐸*⃗ field
changed in the regions (i) 𝑟 < 𝑟! , (ii) 𝑟! < 𝑟 < 𝑟" , and (iii) 𝑟 > 𝑟" ? You do not need to redo the
calculations. Simply write your answers and explanations.
