2. Illustrates and graphs linear inequalities in two variables
3. Solve problems involving Linear Inequalities in two variables (M8AL-IIa-4)
What I Know
Direction: Read each item carefully to answer the following questions. Choose the letter of the
best answer.
1. Which of the following is NOT a linear inequality in two variables?
a. x + y = 5 b. x + y ≤ 5 c. x + y > 5 d. x + y ≥ 5

8. Which of the following should be used if the points on the line are part of the
solution?
a. b. c. d.

For numbers 13-15
Tantan was given at most 15 peso coins, he’s thinking of buying hany and
mash mallows from it. Hany costs 3 pesos each and mash mallows cost one peso. Help Tantan decide how
many pieces of Hany and mallows can he buy?
14. How many pieces of hany can be buy if he had bought 7 pieces of mallows
already?
a. 1 or 2 b. 3 c. 4 d. 5
15. Which of the following ordered pair is not a solution to the problem?
What’s In
A. If x > 4, what are the values of x in the number line? Show it in the number line.
C. There are 4 yellow ribbons each cost 3 pesos, and a number of red ribbons which cost 2 pesos each,
how many red ribbons do you need to be able to pay exactly 22 pesos?
The three questions are taken from your previous topic in linear equation in two
variables. Solve for the correct answer then check your work.

C. There are 4 yellow ribbons each cost 3 pesos, and a number of red ribbons
which cost 2 pesos each, how many red ribbons do you need to be able to pay exactly 22 pesos?
Represent as an equation. The equation will be based on the number of red ribbon (x)
and the number of yellow ribbon (y), and their prices.
2x + 3y = 22
And since the price of the yellow ribbon is already given, which is 4 pesos. Therefore we
will substitute 4 to y.
Solution.
−10 x
Simplify 3(4) 2x + 12 = 22
Subtract 12 in both equation 2x = 22 – 12
Divide both side by 2 2x = 10
What’s New
What is It
In the previous modules, you had learned how to solve linear equations in two variables; hence,
some worded problems also involve inequalities. Remember that a linear equation is an expression that
uses equality sign (=). While on the other hand, linear inequalities use inequality symbols like greater than
(>), greater than or equal to (≥), less than (<), less than or equal to (≤), and not equal (≠). This module will
help you to solve problems and expressions that deal with inequalities.
Exercise 1. The following are expressions in two variables, classify them by drawing if linear inequality
and draw if linear equation.
1. x + y = 7
2. 3x – 2y ≥ - 6
3. x – y ≤ 2
4. y > 2x + 3
5. y = 4x – 2
≠ not equal
Answer in activity 1.
Here are the steps in graphing linear inequalities in two variables using slope intercepts form y =
mx + b.
By doing it, we can now identify the slope (m) and y-intercept (b)
rise 4
m= = ( if the slope is a whole number, it has a denominator of 1)
run 1
this indicates that rise is 4 and run is 1. b = 1, which lies on the y-axis.
b. From the y-intercept, move 4 units upward if rise is positive or move 4 units downward if rise is
negative. Rise = 4
c. Without lifting your pen, move 1 unit to the right, if run is positive or move 1 unit left, if the run
is negative. Run = 1

d. Determine what type of line to be used.
Remember: Use broken or dashed lines if the inequality contains > or
< symbols. Use solid line if the inequality contains ≥ or ≤ symbols.

Step 3. Shading parts. Shade the half plane above if the inequality uses > 𝒐r ≥. If
otherwise, shade the half plane below if the inequality uses < 𝒐r ≤ .
y > 4x + 1
Step 4. Check some points on the graph to identify the shaded portion.
There are two points plotted on the graph,
but which one is in the solution of y > 4x
+ 1?
B. Graphing Inequalities using X and Y intercept
intercept. Here are suggested steps in graphing linear inequalities in two variables using x and y
intercepts.
Step 4. Check some points on the graph to clearly identify the shaded portion.
There are two points in the
Cartesian
plane, point A and point B,
which do you think is in the
solution of the inequality?
Since you already know how to graph linear inequalities in two variables,
this time we are going to apply this knowledge in a real-life situation.
Example 1.
Amy bought a soda and Boy Bawang and paid at most 14 pesos.
What is the possible price for soda and Boy Bawang?
How to represent ? x + y ≤ 14
How to graph?
solve for x intercept and y intercept
x + y ≤ 14 x x + y ≤ 14
+ (0) ≤ 14 x ≤ (0)+ y≤ 14
14 y ≤ 14
5 + 4 ≤ 14
9 ≤ 14, TRUE!
x + y ≤ 14
10 + 5 ≤ 14
15 ≤ 14, FALSE!
Example 2. Pottery sells two types of pot, small and medium. Small pot cost 10
pesos and medium pot cost 25 pesos each. How many of each type of pot should they offer if
the customer has only at least 100 pesos?
How to graph?
solve for x intercept and y intercept
70 ≥ 100, FALSE!
50 + 50 ≥ 100
What’s More
4. y = 2x + 3
5. y ≥ 4x – 2
B. Given the following equation, (√) check if it contains the description on the table.

Example:
4x + 3y ≥ 5 / /
1. y < 3x – 6
2. 2y ≤ 5x + 4
3. 7x – 2y > 8
4. 6x + y ≥ 1
5. y < 9x + 2
What I Can Do
Activity 3. Application.
Help Nanay Tesing decide on the prices of puto and kusinta.
In order to meet the costumer’s demand, Nanay Pacing’s kakanin must be
able to produce 4 small bilao of puto and 2 small bilao of kutsinta, and earned at least 300 pesos.
1. Represent as linear inequalities in two variables.
2. If small bilao of kutsinta cost one hundred each, how much is a small bilao of
puto?
3. Show the graph of Nanay Pacing’s sale.
4. Will Nanay Pacing be still got an income of at least 300 pesos, if she sold 1 bilao
of kutsinta for only 90 pesos, and puto for only 20 pesos? Yes or No? Why?
Assessment
14. If you score 45 in Math and 30 in English, will you be able to have a Jollibee
meal?
a. Yes, because 45 + 30 is more than 90
b. Yes, because 45 + 30 is greater than 90
c. No, because 45 + 30 is less than 90
d. No, because 45 + 30 is equal to 90
15. Which of the following should be your score to please your mother?
a. less than 90
b. more than 90
c. less than or equal to 90
d. more than or equal to 90
