Direction: Review the previous topic by answering the following activity.
Questions

A. If x > 4, what are the values of x in the number line? Show it in the number line.

B. Graph the equation – 5x + y = 10,

a. using slope-intercept form ( y = mx + b)
b. using x and y-intercept ( x = 0, y = 0 )

C. There are 4 yellow ribbons each cost 3 pesos, and a number of red ribbons which cost 2 pesos each,
how many red ribbons do you need to be able to pay exactly 22 pesos?

The three questions are taken from your previous topic in linear equation in two
variables. Solve for the correct answer then check your work.

Answers:

A. x > 4, the values of x should be those numbers that are greater than 4, example

5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10… ( 4 is not included in the solution)

B. Graph – 10x + 2y = 20, using slope-intercept and x and y-intercept.

C. There are 4 yellow ribbons each cost 3 pesos, and a number of red ribbons
which cost 2 pesos each, how many red ribbons do you need to be able to pay exactly 22 pesos?

Represent as an equation. The equation will be based on the number of red ribbon (x)
and the number of yellow ribbon (y), and their prices.
2x + 3y = 22
And since the price of the yellow ribbon is already given, which is 4 pesos. Therefore we
will substitute 4 to y.

Solution.

So the next equation will be: 2x + 3y = 22

Substitute the value of y 2x + 3(4) = 22

−10 x
Simplify 3(4) 2x + 12 = 22
Subtract 12 in both equation 2x = 22 – 12
Divide both side by 2 2x = 10

The obtain value of x is 5. x=5

There are 5 red ribbons needed.

What’s New

What is the price of Boy Bawang and soda?

In this problem, there are two quantities, soda and Boy Bawang,
likewise, Amy paid an amount of at most 14 pesos, what does “at most” means? Is it equal to 14? Is it
greater than 14? Is it less than 14? Problems like this use the concepts of Linear Inequalities in two
variables. Do the following activity for you to understand the difference between Linear Equation in two
variables and Linear Inequality in two variables. And we will go back to Amy’s problem later.

What is It

In the previous modules, you had learned how to solve linear equations in two variables; hence,
some worded problems also involve inequalities. Remember that a linear equation is an expression that
uses equality sign (=). While on the other hand, linear inequalities use inequality symbols like greater than
(>), greater than or equal to (≥), less than (<), less than or equal to (≤), and not equal (≠). This module will
help you to solve problems and expressions that deal with inequalities.
Exercise 1. The following are expressions in two variables, classify them by drawing if linear inequality
and draw if linear equation.
1. x + y = 7

2. 3x – 2y ≥ - 6

3. x – y ≤ 2

4. y > 2x + 3

5. y = 4x – 2

What is Linear Inequality in Two Variables?

Two variables mean, using two different quantities, these quantities are represented by x and y,
and can be graph using the rectangular coordinate plane.
From the given Exercise 1, linear inequalities use inequality symbols, inequalities also show
the relation between two expressions that are not equal, and you also need to understand that in
inequalities there are more possible values that can satisfy the inequality equation. Look at the table and
remember those symbols and their meaning.

5. y = 4x – 2 Linear Equation it uses = sign

II. Illustrating and Graphing Linear Inequalities in Two

Variables

In this part, we will graph linear inequalities in two variables using

(a) Slope Intercept Form and
(b) X and Y-intercept.

A. Graphing Linear Inequalities Using Slope-Intercept Form

Here are the steps in graphing linear inequalities in two variables using slope intercepts form y =
mx + b.

Example: Graph the inequality y > 4x + 1

Step 1. Replace the inequality symbol with an equal sign.

The inequality y > 4x + 1 will become y = 4x + 1

By doing it, we can now identify the slope (m) and y-intercept (b)

rise 4
m= = ( if the slope is a whole number, it has a denominator of 1)
run 1
this indicates that rise is 4 and run is 1. b = 1, which lies on the y-axis.

Step 2. Graph the equation obtained in step 1 using slope-intercept from y = mx + b.

Steps in graphing by slope-intercept form

a. Locate your y-intercept b.

b. From the y-intercept, move 4 units upward if rise is positive or move 4 units downward if rise is
negative. Rise = 4

c. Without lifting your pen, move 1 unit to the right, if run is positive or move 1 unit left, if the run
is negative. Run = 1
rise
Remember that slope (m) =
run
d. Determine what type of line to be used.
Remember: Use broken or dashed lines if the inequality contains > or
< symbols. Use solid line if the inequality contains ≥ or ≤ symbols.

the inequality symbol is >.

Step 3. Shading parts. Shade the half plane above if the inequality uses > 𝒐r ≥. If
otherwise, shade the half plane below if the inequality uses < 𝒐r ≤ .

y > 4x + 1

Since the inequality uses >

, shade the half plane above the broken line.

Step 4. Check some points on the graph to identify the shaded portion.
There are two points plotted on the graph,
but which one is in the solution of y > 4x
+ 1?
B. Graphing Inequalities using X and Y intercept

Another way of how to graph linear inequalities in two variables is by x and y

intercept. Here are suggested steps in graphing linear inequalities in two variables using x and y
intercepts.

Example 2. Graph the inequality 3x + y ≤ - 6.

Step 1. Replace the inequality symbol with an equal sign.
The inequality 3x + y ≤ - 6 will become 3x + y = - 6

Step 2. Determine the x and y-intercepts

To find the x- intercept (a), set the value of y to zero (0), then solve the equation
obtained from equation 1. Same with y-intercept (b), set the value of x to zero (0) then
solve.

Solve for x – intercept Solve for y – intercept

3x + y = - 6 3x + y = - 6
3x + 0 = -6 3(0) + y = - 6
3x = - 6 0+y=-6
x = -2 y=-6
The point is ( -2, 0) The point is ( 0, -6)

Step 3. Graph the inequality 3x + y ≤ - 6.

Plot the x and y

intercept in a
Cartesian plane, then
connect the points
using solid line,
because the inequality
contains ≤ symbol.
Shade the half plane
below.

Step 4. Check some points on the graph to clearly identify the shaded portion.
There are two points in the
Cartesian
plane, point A and point B,
which do you think is in the
solution of the inequality?

Let’s check both point B(1,4)

Graphing linear inequality in two variables can be done using different methods. Two of
them are

To determine what type of line to be used, (5) will be used if the inequality

≤ symbol. In addition, I will shade (7) _ if the inequality uses > or ≥ symbol, and (8)
if the inequality uses < or ≤ symbol.
Lastly, in order to be curtained of my answer, I will (9) by using some points
