Final Examination, Fall - 2019
Course Code: CE 321 Course Title: Water Resource Engineering I
Section: D1 and D2 Teacher’s Initial: MRK
Full Marks: 25 Date: 18.11.2021 Time: 2 hr

Section A
Answer any Three from this section.
(3x2=6)

1. Describe how hydrograph gets affected by the catchment shape and drainage
Density.
2. Describe rational method for estimating flood discharge.
3. Compare between Recording and Non-Recording rain gauges.
4. Describe Hortons equation to estimate infiltration rate.
5. Explain the different methods of finding mean velocity in a stream.

Section B
Answer all questions from this section

1. The normal annual rainfall at station A, B, C, D in a basin are 20.6,35,37.5,39.2cm

respectively. In the year 1995, station D was not working and station A,B,C recorded
annual precipitations 41.2, 41.8and 46.3 respectively. Analyze the rainfall at station D
in that year. (2)

2. There are four station in the following catchment having precipitation of 4.6mm, 25.7 mm,
20 mm and 10.5 mm consecutively. Apply THIESSEN POLYGON METHOD and
estimate the average precipitation in the catchment (3)
3. The following are the ordinates of 4hour unit hydrograph of a catchment area of 650
km2. Develop a storm hydrograph for the basin due to 6 cm rain for 4h duration. Assume
base flow to be uniform at 15 m3/s and Ø-index = 0.5 cm/h.

4.Apply Penman’s formula and estimate the daily potential evapotranspiration for the
following data by Penman’s formula: (3)
i. Slope of the saturation vapor pressure vs. temperature at the mean
air temperature = 1.00 mm/oC
ii. Mean temperature = 20oC
iii. Relative humidity = 80%
iv. Wind velocity at 3 m height = 70 km/day
v. Saturated vapour pressure ew = 16.5 mm of Hg
vi. Net radiation = 1.99 mm of water per day
vii. Psychrometric constant = 0.49 mm of Hg/oC

5.The data pertaining to a stream gauging operation at a gauging site are given below.
Illustrate the cross section of the stream and calculate the discharge in the stream . (3)

6. For a period of 55 years for river Padma the mean and standard deviation of the annual
flood series are 3545 cumec and 1264 cumec respectively. Flood discharge with recurrence
interval of 200 years is 15230 cumec. Frequency factor is 2.7. Examine the 90% confidence
limit for this estimation. (3)
