DO NOT OPEN THE QUESTION BOOK OR START UNTIL INSTRUCTED.

Instructions:
1. Verify at the start of the exam that you have a total of two (2) questions plus
three formula sheets printed on ten (10) pages including this title page.
2. Attempt all questions on the question-book and in the given order.
3. The exam is closed books, closed notes. Please see that the area in your threshold
is free of any material classified as ‘useful in the paper’ or else there may a charge
of cheating.
4. Read the questions carefully for clarity of context and understanding of meaning
and make assumptions wherever required, for neither the invigilator will address
your queries, nor the teacher/examiner will come to the examination hall for any
assistance.
5. Fit in all your answers in the provided space. You may use extra space on the last
page if required. If you do so, clearly mark question/part number on that page to
avoid confusion.
6. Use only your own stationery and calculator. If you do not have your own
calculator, use manual calculations.
7. Use only permanent ink-pens. Only the questions attempted with permanent ink-
pens will be considered. Any part of paper done in lead pencil cannot be claimed
for rechecking.

Q1.
CLO-01: Explain the fundamental concepts of communication systems

Answer following short questions. [2+4+2+2+2 = 15 Marks]

a) Indicate the characteristics of fiber-optic channels and the related applications.

1. Optical fibers offer a channel bandwidth that is several orders of magnitude larger than
coaxial cable channels.
2. Optical fiber cables offer a relatively low signal attenuation, and highly reliable photonic
devices, which improve signal generation and signal detection.
3. Fiber optic channels are deployed both in domestic telecommunication systems and for
transatlantic and transpacific communications. Using fiber optic channels, it is possible
to offer telecommunication services, including voice, data, facsimile, and video.

b) Consider a linear filter channel with frequency response

= 1 + cos 2 .
Estimate the channel output .

c) Explain the reason to use conventional AM for AM radio broadcasting instead of other types
of AM?

Due to ease of demodulation and having a large coverage area due to the powerful
transmitters, conventional AM is used for AM radio broadcasting.

d) Describe the use (in terms of applications) of very high frequency (VHF) band.

The VHF band is used for mobile radio, aeronautical application, VHF TV, and FM broadcast.

e) Indicate the peripheral functions performed by a communication receiver beside signal

demodulation.
Besides performing the primary function of signal demodulation, the receiver also performs
peripheral functions like signal filtering and noise suppression.

Q2a.
CLO-02: Analyze analog communication systems such as amplitude-modulated, frequency-
modulated, and phase-modulated systems.
[4+3+3+2 = 12 Marks]
The message signal 7 = cos 2 300 + 2cos 2 900 modulates the carrier signal
; = 4cos 2 7000 using SSB-AM for transmission of the upper-sideband signal.
i) Calculate the SSB-AM upper-sideband signal >?@@A .
ii) Calculate the frequency spectrum B?@@A of >?@@A .
iii) Examine the magnitude spectrum |B?@@A | in the form of a plot.
iv) Calculate the bandwidth efficiency D for SSB-AM?

Q2b.
CLO-02: Analyze analog communication systems such as amplitude-modulated, frequency-
modulated, and phase-modulated systems.
[3+3+2 = 8 Marks]
Consider the superheterodyne receiver for commercial AM radio broadcast system.
i) Let E = 550 kHz be the carrier frequency of the desired radio station. Calculate the
local oscillator frequency GH and the image frequency EI .
Note: JK = 455 kHz.
ii) Identify the bandwidth of the RF amplifier so that the image frequency signal is rejected
while the desired radio signal is passed through (mention the lower and upper limits on
the bandwidth of the RF amplifier)?
iii) Identify the bandwidth of the IF amplifier and its related tuning frequency?
