TOPIC 1: GETTING READY TO LEARN
Firstly, before you go out to pursue your studies at a high level, you need to know the
differences between high school and college so you can adjust yourself into a college life.
From childhood to adulthood, high school gives you a taste of what it’s like to be an
adult.College,on the other hand, allows you to fully take control of your time, responsibilities and
the person you want to became.
You’ll be fine as long as you stay focused on the task at hand, getting great grades, sticking to a
strict schedule, and studying like crazy. Balance is essential in college. Work hard and have a
little fun. If it sounds fantastic, that’s because it is.Here are a few comparisons you’ll notice as
you adjust to your new college lifestyle:
4
By the way, everyone has different learning styles. Some people prefer to learn by seeing or
hearing, while others prefer to learn by doing, reading, or asking questions. All students have
one thing in common: they learn best when they incorporate items and topics that interest them
into their studies.
Identifying your learning styles as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic and aligning your overall
curriculum with these, will boost your entire classroom. Keep in mind that a combination of all
three sensory modalities could be the ultimate idea in some situations.
Visual - to obtain and absorb new information, visual learners prefer to use images, maps, and
illustrations.
Auditory – In situations such as lectures and group discussions, auditory learners best learn
new information by listening and speaking. Audio learners gain from the use of mnemonic
devices and use repetition as a research method.
Kinesthetic – understand information best through touch conceptions of information. These
students are hands-on learners who learn best by doing things by hand.

Nevertheless, if we want to be effective students, we need to possess qualities such as;
1) Attend All Classes – Attending all classes is one of the best strategies to succeed in
college. Going to class allows us to obtain more knowledge and experience, and
maintaining our grade is dependent on our attendance. We can demonstrate our
discipline by doing so.
2) Become An Active Learner – We can learn all of the content in high school by reading
it over a couple of times, but in college, we must write and search for more information to
commit it to long-term memory.
3) Participate in Class – We’ll feel more a part of the class and more actively involved in
the learning process once we start dealing. As a result, we will be able to grasp more in
class.
4) Get to know your lecturers – We can go find lecturers during our free time, either
before or after class or during office hours. Check on our progress in the course or ask a
question concerning the subject. We may feel more comfortable seeking assistance if
we come to know our instructors.
5) Study Group with Friends – Study groups of three to four persons have been shown to
be quite beneficial. Make sure, however that we choose people who are serious about
their academics, so that our work progresses.
6) Stay up to date with your work – Many first-year college students struggle to keep up
with all the tasks required in class. We may never be able to catch up on our reading if
we are behind. As the semester passes, the work burden in college grows. Never be a
procrastinator.
7) Be receptive to change – If the procedures we utilized in high school aren’t working,
ask the lecturer, tutor,or counsellor for other learning methods. Even if the tactics they
propose don’t appear to be practical, we must be willing to give them a try. We won’t see
changes in your performance unless we modify the way we take notes, read, materials
and prepare for examinations.
8) Work Hard every semester – Don’t make the mistake of doing things that aren’t
necessary. We’ll need more time to perform our job well is we want excellent scores, are
slow in catching what lectures teach, or a taking challenging courses. After all, what
we’ve accomplished must be worthwhile to us.

TOPIC 2: GOALS SETTING
Do you ever feel as if you’re sleepwalking through life, unsure of what you want?
Perhaps you know exactly what you want to accomplish but don’t know how to get there.
This is where goal setting comes into play. Goals are the first step in planning for the future, and
they play an important role in the development of skills in many shining targets at which we aim
our arrow.
Understanding the significance of goals and the techniques involved in setting attainable goals
helps to pave the way for success.
9
1) SPECIFIC – Your goal should be clear and specific so that you can focus your efforts
and feel truly motivated to achieve it. Try to answer the five “W” questions when writing
your goal.
2) MEASURABLE – It’s essential to set measurable objectives so you can track your
progress and stay motivated. Measuring your progress will help you stay focused, reach
your deadlines, and feel the excitement of staying close to your target.
3) ATTAINABLE – To be productive, your aim must also be suitable and reachable. To put
it another way, it should challenge your abilities while still being achievable. You might
be able to identify previously missed risks or resources that can help you get close to
your goal if you set an achievable target.
4) RELEVANT – This step is to make sure your goals are important to you and consistent
with other related goals. We all need support to reach our goals but managing them is
important. So make sure your plan moves everyone forward, but you are still responsible
for achieving your own goals.
5) TIME-BASED – Every goal needs a target date so that you can focus on the deadline
and work on something. This part of the SMART goal criteria helps prevent daily tasks
from prioritizing over long-term goals.
10
Goals that can be achieved quickly are called short-term goals. Goals that take a long time to
reach are called long-term goals.
A short-term goal is something you want to do in near future. Near future can mean today, this
week, this month or this year. Short-term goals are what you want to achieve soon. Short-term
goals are goals that can be achieved within 12 months.
Long-term goals are what you want to achieve in the future. Long-term goals require time and
planning. Neither this week nor this year. It usually takes 12 months or more to achieve long-
term goals.
Academic goals may be limited in environment, whereas personal goals are typically larger in
scope, with long term objectives in mind.
Academic goals are usually measured and validated by external examiners according to a
given curriculum.
Personal Goals can be achieved in your own time frame, you can jump and move to the limit or
small steps. You achieve your personal goals in a variety of ways.
11
Setting SMART goals is a necessary skill for both personal and professional success. If you’re
not setting goals, you’re not going to make any progress. Writing effective goals increases your
chances of achieving them successfully or quarterly. Fortunately, goal setting is a skill that can
be learned and improved.

TOPIC 3 : GETTING TO KNOW THE CAMPUS
When you think of a campus, you probably think of a college or university, which
includes libraries, labs, classrooms, and dorms among the things. Other institutions with
campuses include hospitals, high schools and the offices of some businesses. The word
campus from the Latin word campus, which means “a field “.
My campus called UITM KEDAH. UiTM Kedah is a Universiti Teknologi MARA campus.
UiTM is Malaysia's only university with campuses in all of the country's states. These
campuses offer excellent opportunities for bumiputeras from all over the country to
pursue higher education and improve their economic and social well-being.

WHAT IS PROCRASTINATION?
Procrastination is one of the biggest roadblocks to waking up, making the proper
decisions, and living the life you've always dreamed.
According to recent studies, people regret the things they haven't done more than the
things they have. Furthermore, regret and guilt that comes with wasted chances seem to
last for much longer.
All of our opportunities appear to be at our hands at times, yet we simply don't
understand them. When you procrastinate, you are wasting time that could be spent on
something more important. You will be able to do more and better utilize the potential
that life has to offer if you can fight this formidable foe.
We already know that today's world helps to encourage procrastination, thus learning
how to fight it is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire.

TOPIC 5: MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
WHAT IS MEMORY?
Sensory memory
- The stimuli will be stored in short-term memory if you pay attention to them. The information
will be lost if one does not pay attention.
Short-term memory
- Immediate memory refers to the ability to recall a tiny amount of data in a matter of seconds.
- Working memory is a system for storing and managing information needed to perform complex
cognitive processes including learning, thinking, and comprehension.
28
Long-term memory
1. Long periods of time can be used to store useful information.
Memory is made up of three basic processes: encoding, storage, and retrieval.
Concentration is the mental effort you put on to focus on whatever you're working on or
learning right now. It's sometimes confused with attention and concentration; however attention
span relates to how long you can focus on something for.

TOPIC 6: TAKING LECTURE NOTES
This includes taking notes while doing any preparation reading and while listening in
class. In addition, after the lecture, you might go through your lecture notes again.
The lecture notes give you an idea of what's significant in the textbook. The combination
of lecture notes with notes from textbook content is a good review for examinations.
1) Before and after class, see through your notes from the current lecture to make sure
you're up to speed on where you left off.
2) Use any lesson outlines, PowerPoint slides, or a general overview of the upcoming
lecture that your teacher provides. This is the most efficient way to receive
information, which is what notetaking is all about. Look for course materials and
lecture outlines on the internet.
31
3) According to certain research, students who take notes by hand are better able to
retain and recall lecture material. It's easier to format, save, edit, share, and read
notes on a laptop. Because some professors forbid students from using laptops in
class, it's important to know how to take notes by hand.
4) If you're going to take notes on a laptop or other electronic device, make sure it's
fully charged and ready to go before class starts. Some people like loose note sheets
because they can spread them out on the table or on the floor, while others prefer
bound notebooks because they are more organised.
5) If you are distracted by noisy classmates, shift to a new seat quietly. Locate a
location where you can plainly see and hear the lecturer. You should also be able to
easily view the board.
