Hiroshima Essay

On August six, on a cold morning in a beautiful city called Hiroshima; The United

States of America dropped the first ever atomic bomb in hopes to stop the war. In doing

that, the United state killed and injured over 100,000 innocent civilians. Morally,

dropping the atomic bomb was the wrong decision. Though the bomb did stop the war, it

caused a lot of people to die, it caused radiation and even some scientists thought it

was going to start a nuclear war.

First, the atomic bomb dropping was bad becuase alot of innoncent people were

killed and injured. “In a city of two hundred and forty-five thousand, nearly a hundred

thousand people had been killed or doomed at one blow; a hundred thousand more

were hurt”(Hersey 25). The bomb dropping killed about 40% of their population. The

other 40% of the polulation were injured very badly, some stuck under bookshelves,

some stuck under a collapsed house or building struggling to breathe.

Secondly, after the bomb was dropped people started noticing weird things

happening to them. No one knew what was happening but come to find out it was

caused by radiation. “What have you done to your wounds?” They had suddenly

opened wider and were swollen and inflamed”(Hersey 68). Another quote is “Nakamura,

who had suffered no cuts or burns at all...began fixing her hair and noticed, after one

stroke, that her comb carried with it a whole hown accord, until she was quite bald”
(Hershey 68). This shows that radiation had a long lasting effect on everyone.. It was

bad for the environment and made people's wounds worse. Even if they weren't

wounded they were still being affected by the radiation.

Lastly, some scientists didnt like the idea of dropping the bomb beuase they were

scared it could start a nucler war. “The development of atomic power will provide

nations with new means of destruction” (Pétition et al. 2). Its saying that once they

realise the bomb a lot of people might get new ideas and make new weapons that can

cause even more destruction than the atomic bomb.

In the end, the bomb dropping was a horrible and terrbile decsision becuase not

only just killing thousands of people by solving a short term problem, but in the long run,

in the city of Hiroshema they will feel the affects from the atomic bomb forever.
