Far Away But Close

My best friend loves celebrating her birthdays. We have a beautiful

tradition: we always help each other organize everything, we make a cake
for the other one, we look for the perfect gift, and most importantly, we
make sure that the birthday girl has a very special day. Last year I had a
complicated mission; I had to fulfill each task being twelve thousands
kilometers away.
In Argentina, People were in lock down and couldn´t meet with
anybody during August of last year. Camila knew she would have to spend
her birthday isolated in her house and was a bit depressed about it. That´s
why our friends organize a zoom meeting to celebrate with her that day.
I was living another reality, in a country where the virus lasted only a
month. I knew she needed me there, and how much she missed me, so I
tried not to fail her. I bought her a cake and a present which took me two
months to choose, and I made my parents take both things to her house,
including a letter which I had written before I left.
The hard part was being able to attend the celebration: there was a
time difference of twelve hours between Buenos Aires and Sydney, and I
had to be working at the time my friends were going to connect.
I spent all my shift watching the clock, wishing that the meeting
would be long enough to let me be part of it. As soon as I finished
working, I ran to my house and turned on the computer. There they were,
my five friends laughing through the screen. My best friend shouted
excitedly when she saw me; she could hardly believe believe I made it.
We spent 2 hours chatting about everything, we danced, we laugh
until our ribs got tired and had a wonderful time. I will never forget the
smile in Cami´s face. That day we learnt that we will always be close, no
matter the distance.
