What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the research process and scientific attitudes. The scope of
this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
The module is divided into two (2) lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – The Research Process
• Lesson 2 – Scientific Attitudes

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Define research.
2. Identify the steps in research process.
3. Recognize the scientific attitudes shown by different scientists in
various situations.
4. Determine the scientific attitude exemplified in the given situations. 5.
Demonstrate the positive traits of a scientist in doing scientific
investigation.
___________________________________________________________________________
FOR THE LEARNER:
This module contains activities about the research process and
scientific attitudes. You may answer directly to this activity sheets and make
sure to follow the directions stated in each part of the activity. Answer all
questions the best that you can and please write eligibly.

FOR THE PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

Learners may require your guidance in following the directions and
answering the questions in each part of the activity. Make sure that they
answer each part of the worksheet.

Lesson 1: Research and Its Processes

According to Neil Armstrong, “Research is creating new
knowledge” Indeed, research has played a major role in our scientific
investigations and endeavors, in finding answers and solutions to our
endless questions and problems. It helped us in any possible way it can. To
simply put this, research is done primarily for three (3) purposes:
1. To show you how to investigate what you do not know yet, like
unlocking the door to a new world;
2. To give you chance to experiment and discover something new; 3. To
develop in our country a research culture such that, as much as
possible, we base our observations, conclusions and decisions on certain
findings and facts.
Research always follows a methodical investigation in establishing
facts and coming up with conclusions, that is, it is done through careful
planning and following certain steps and procedures. These are the steps:
• Identifying a research problem—What do I want to know? What is it
about this topic that interests me?
• Gathering of information—What do I know about this topic? What
additional information do I need? What resources are available?
• Formulating hypothesis—What do I expect to find out?
• Designing and conducting of experiment—What are my variables?
What equipment or materials do I need? What data do I need to
collect? How will I collect my data?
• Analyzing data—Am I recording relevant data? Am I objective in my
collection of data? How will I organize and summarize my data? What
does my data show? Are these significant?
• Drawing conclusion—Are there any trends or patterns in my data? Are
these sufficient in order for me to answer my question? What could I
derive from my data?
• Report the findings—Who are my audience? What is the best way to

The Research Process

communicate the results of my study?

Lesson
2: Scientific Attitudes
This lesson tackles the traits or attitudes a person must possess
in order to be successful in making scientific investigations. You will have to
learn to develop these scientific attitudes through continuous study and
research. You must be patient, persevering, and will have to adapt scientific
method in solving problem.
Scientists often work in much the same way. Note that there is no
single formula on how to become a scientist. For one thing, being super
intelligent and having high-IQ is not an absolute requirement, as many of
the exceptional scientists that we know of did not always do well in school.
• CURIOSITY—This implies the desire to learn. A curious person would
frequently ask questions about the world.
• INTELLECTUAL HONESTY—This is reporting the findings truthfully,
acknowledging others’ contributions and not claiming works that do
not belong to them.
• OPEN-MINDEDNESS—This is the ability of a person to accept new
ideas and information. An open-minded person is adaptable and
flexible.
• OBJECTIVITY—Being able to distinguish true observation from
hearsay. An objective person decides on logical reason and facts. He or
she is not influenced by other people.
• PERSEVERANCE—Ability of a person to continue to work in spite of
many obstacles. It means being determined to finish what one has
started.
• HUMILITY—Being able to keep someone’s feet on the ground and
remain humble in spite of what he/she has accomplished.
Furthermore, this means that one is able to admit his/her mistakes.
• POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS FAILURE—Not giving up on one’s
work even if he/she fails many times as it may become a way to
success. Failing may sometimes lead one to find new ways to solve a
problem.
• HEALTHY SKEPTICISM—This is the ability to question the validity and
authenticity of data or information. It means that one does not accept
claims to knowledge without critical analysis.

What’s More

Activity 1. TELL ME!

Identify the scientific attitude exemplified by the following scientists.
1. I am Thomas Alva Edison. I once said “I have not failed. I’ve just found
10,000 ways that didn’t work.” I conducted more than 10, 000 failed
experiments in order to construct light bulbs.
What scientific attitude did I exemplify? _______________________________
2. My name is Stephen Hawking. I am British theoretical physicist known
for my research on black hole and advanced cosmology. Although I cannot
speak and barely move because of Lou Gehrig’s disease, I still continue to
explain theoretical physics to public through books, lectures and films.
What scientific attitude did I show? ___________________________________
3. My name is Isaac Newton. You have probably seen my picture under a
tree when an apple fell to the ground. I observed many objects falling
and began asking what made things fall? Why did the sun, moon, and
stars never fall? I spent many years answering these questions through
thinking and doing experiments.
What scientific attitude did I show? ____________________________________
4. I am Galileo Galilei. I was known to question the belief that heavier
objects would fall at faster rate than the lighter one. I was able to prove
that this idea was wrong.
What scientific attitude did I demonstrate? ____________________________

personal life.
WHAT I NEED:
✓ Pen
✓ Picture of your chosen scientist
✓ Your picture
WHAT TO DO:
1. Read their life stories, including their achievements and contributions.
2. Identify the scientific attitudes s/he was known best and cite attitudes
you have that you think matches with his/her traits.
3. Present your output using the organizer shown on the next page.

Question to Ponder:
• Do you think that anyone could become a scientist? Defend your
answer.

What I Have Learned

1. Research is a careful and systematic investigation of the subject in
order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
2. It involves logical and rational order of steps in answering questions
and finding solutions to a certain problem.
3. Research process is composed of seven (7) steps namely: (1) identify
the problem; (2) gather information; (3) formulate hypothesis; (4)
design and conduct experiment; (5) analyze data; (6) draw
conclusions; (7) communicate the results.
4. A person, not just scientists, who studies science and research
must display scientific values and attitudes.
5. A scientist must be curious and inquisitive, honest, objective,
humble, open-minded, skeptic, must have a positive outlook
towards failure, and never gives up.
