 From The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parish Family,
Have you ever enjoyed (or survived) a long road trip
with family or friends? Ever share a very long plane ride
with a stranger and find out that by the end of the trip
you’ve become fast friends with your seatmate? How
about just a day hike or even a walk around a running
track with a neighbor? There’s something about sharing
the road (or the skies or the path) with someone else.
Conversations start; points of contact are made.
Friendships grow. People get closer. Okay, not always.
Some trips are absolute disasters, let’s face it. But at
least the possibility for deeper bonding is there, in the
journey itself.
This is what is happening on the journey of the two
disciples to Emmaus in today’s Gospel (Luke 24: 13-35).
They’re really two friends, two disciples of Jesus returning
from a funeral. But not just any funeral. In the case of
Jesus, what started out as a triumphal entry into Jerusa-
lem transformed-- in less than a week-- into a horrific
nightmare of detention, torture, and public execution. As
they share the road and their grief, these two fellow trav-
elers converse and debate, each from their own limited
perspective, the meaning of these shocking events. And
despite the testimony of witnesses, they cannot conceive
of the possibility of Christ’s resurrection from the dead.
In the midst of this conversation and debate that the
Risen Christ appears. He “appears”— transformed,
unrecognizable even to these members of his company of
friends. He engages them in dialogue and discussion, do-
ing exactly what He did throughout his public ministry—
challenging them to deeper faith and opening their
minds. But it is only after they have grown closer together
through their shared journey and dialogue—culminating
in the breaking of the bread—that these disciples begin
to become aware of the real presence of the Lord. And
they are completely amazed and dumbfounded.
But why should they (or we) be surprised? Didn’t Jesus
tell them (and us) that every time that two or more are
gathered in His presence that He is with them? Just as
Jesus appeared to the disciples on the way to Emmaus,
He invariably appears in our lives—in our journeys, in our
conversations—even in our debates. He is the silent,
unexpected, and sometimes even uninvited guest
(“Bidden or not, God is present.”) with His power to
teach, to heal and to transform our lives. Most especially,
in the breaking of the bread—in the Eucharist we share
and are called to live. Christ is risen, alleluia, alleluia!
Elsewhere in the Parish:
This weekend, both in the United States and in Mexico,
we celebrate Mother’s Day. Our deep thanks and grati-
tude to the Lord for the gift of our moms, grandmothers,
and all those who have shown us a mother’s love in our
lives! Special thanks to the members of our Hispanic
community who participated in this past Friday’s Noche
de Alabanza/Evening of Praise and in the retreat of the
Grupo de las Mujeres (Women’s Group) for their hard
work and dedication.
Many thanks as well to all who participated in the
beautiful Flores de Mayo (The Flowers of May) celebra-
tion organized and hosted by our Filipino community at
the 5:00 pm Mass last Sunday. How wonderful to have
had this celebration on Mercy Sunday—and on the date
of the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Salamat!
We are now in the second month of our three-month
3 x 15 campaign to complete fundraising for the Our Lady
of Guadalupe Sports Court/ Parking Lot. Nearly 500
families turned in donation envelopes during April,
committing themselves to contributing $15.00 per month
for three months toward the project. In just three weeks,
we have already raised $12,000 towards our goal!! Many,
many thanks to all who contributed so generously. We
invite the participation of all our parishioners as we head
into the home stretch of this great project. We can do it!
Paved and paid for by this summer!

BOY SCOUTS ARE COMING
With the recommendation of the parish
advisory board our parish will once again
sponsor a Boy Scout Troop. There will be an
organizational meeting at 6 pm on Sunday May 15
in the main hall of the McKeon Center. All boys
age 11 or who have completed the 5th grade or are age 10
but have completed the cub scout Arrow of Light award and
have not reached the age of 18 are eligible to join. Troop
leadership is from the parish. Interested scouts or leaders

K of C PRO-LIFE BABY SHOWER TIME!
K of C is collecting baby items to benefit
Pregnancy Resource Center, a Christian based
organization focused on preventing abortions
by providing free services to moms and
pregnant women.

Masses on Sunday, May 15th. Along with any additional

Memorial Day.

Prayer Formation & Opportunities
CENTERING PRAYER: is a renewal of the rich tradition of con-
templative prayer in the Christian Church. It is designed to
reduce obstacles to an intimate personal relationship with
God. Our centering prayer group meets every Wednesday
evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for prayer and instruction in
Rm. #12 in the McKeon Ctr. For additional information, log

INTERCESSORY PRAYER: our parishioners have the
opportunity to write their needs and blessings in the
Intercessory Prayer books that are located in the Serra
Center and the Parish Chapel. Members of this ministry meet
each Saturday, from 8:15-9:00 a.m. in Rm. 209 to pray for all
members and the intentions written by the parishioners in
the books. Members may also pray at home. Anyone can be
part of this ministry: shut-ins, retired, etc. For further

a living wage and to remain in their home village. We learn

chase the coffee and benefit from the labors of their love.
The farming families shared their hope, trust, and persever-
ance with the authors.

Del Escritorio del Párroco
Querida Familia Parroquial, ¿Han ustedes disfrutado (o so-
brevivido) de un viaje largo con la familia o con amigos?
¿Han compartido alguna vez un vuelo largo sentado al lado
de un extraño y observado que al final del viaje ustedes se
han convertido rápidamente en Amigos de su compañero
viajero? ¿Qué tal solamente un día durante una caminata
con tu vecino? Algo ocurre cuando se comparte la carretera
(o el cielo o el camino) con otra persona. La conversación
comienza; se hacen puntos de contacto. Surgen amistades.
La gente se acerca. Bueno, no siempre. Algunos viajes son
unos desastres absolutos. Vamos a aceptarlo. Pero, por lo
menos, la posibilidad de un vínculo más profundo existe allí,
en el mismo viaje.
Esto es lo que sucede en el viaje a Emaus de los dos discípu-
los en el Evangelio de hoy (Lucas 24:13-35.) Ellos son real-
mente dos amigos, dos discípulos de Jesús regresando de un
funeral. Pero no un funeral cualquiera. En el caso de Jesús, lo
que comenzó como una entrada triunfal en Jerusalén, trans-
formada en menos de una semana—en la pesadilla horrible
de la detención, tortura y ejecución pública. Mientras ellos
compartían la carretera y su pena, estos dos viajeros conver-
saban y debatían, cada uno desde su perspectiva propia, el
significado de estos sucesos escandalizantes. A pesar del
testimonio de los testigos, ellos no podían concebir la posibi-
lidad de Cristo resucitar de entre los muertos.
En medio de esta conversación y de este debate aparece el
Cristo Resucitado. El “aparece” - transformado, irreconocible
aún para estos miembros de su compañía de amigos. El se
une a ellos en el diálogo y la conversación, haciendo exacta-
mente lo que El hizo a través de su ministerio público, retán-
dolos a ellos hacia una fe más profunda y abriéndoles sus
mentes. Pero no fue hasta después que ellos estuvieron más
unidos a través de compartir el dialogo y el viaje—
culminando al partir el pan—que estos discípulos comenza-
ron a reconocer la presencia real del Señor. Y ellos se en-
cuentran atónitos y completamente asombrados.
¿Y por qué ellos (o nosotros) deben preocuparse? ¿No les
dijo Jesús a ellos (y a nosotros) que cada vez que dos o más
se encuentren unidos en Su presencia, El está con ellos? Al
igual que Jesús se le apareció a los discípulos que caminaban
hacia Emaus, El aparece invariablemente en nuestras vidas,
en nuestros viajes, en nuestras conversaciones, aún en nues-
tras discusiones. El es el invitado silencioso, inesperado y a
veces el visitante que no ha sido invitado (Invitado o no, Dios
está presente) con Su poder para enseñar, para sanar y para
transformar nuestras vidas. Muy especialmente, al partir el
pan, en la Eucaristía que nosotros compartimos y que esta-
mos llamados a vivir. ¡Cristo está resucitado, aleluya, alelu-
ya!

Más allá en la Parroquia:
Esta semana, en Estados Unidos y en México, nosotros cele-
bramos el Día de las Madres. ¡Nuestra gratitud y gracias
profundas hacia nuestro Señor por el regalo de nuestras
madres, de nuestras abuelas y hacia todas aquellas que nos
han mostrado un amor maternal en nuestras vidas! Le ex-
tendemos gracias especiales a los miembros de la comuni-
dad hispana que participaron este viernes pasado en la No-
che de Alabanza y en el retiro de un Grupo de Damas por su
trabajo y por su dedicación.
Muchas gracias también a los que participaron en las hermo-
sas, Flores de Mayo, la celebración organizada y dirigida por
la comunidad Filipina, celebrada después de la Misa de 5:00
p.m. el domingo pasado. ¡Qué maravilloso el tener esta cele-
bración el Domingo de la Misericordia Divina y en la fecha de
la Beatificación de el Papa Juan Pablo II.
Estamos ahora en el segundo mes de la campaña 3 x 15 para
compartir los fondos necesarios para la construcción de la
Cancha Deportiva y el Estacionamiento Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe. Alrededor de 500 familias entregaron sus
sobres, comprometiéndose a donar sus $15 mensuales para
este proyecto. ¡En solo dos semanas, ya hemos obtenido
$12,000 dólares hacia nuestra meta! Nosotros invitamos a
todos los feligreses a participar en este proyecto al acercar-
nos al inicio de este gran proyecto. ¡Nosotros podemos
hacerlo! ¡Pavimentado y pagado en este verano!

proyecto mensual. MOP está abierto para
