1.0. INTRODUCTION
These works comprising of geotechnical investigations and testing etc. relating to
“Geotechnical Investigation Works at various locations in Palghar and Thane districts of C3
package of Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project”. This work was performed by S. M.
Consultants, Bhubaneswar as requisitioned by National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd.,
Palghar. According to the requirements contained in the said assignment, field investigations as well
as laboratory testing were taken up for ascertaining the desired sub soil parameters/characteristics
for appropriate use in relevant engineering designs of the project.
Findings during boring operations at the proposed location, results of examination and testing
of field samples in the laboratory comprising of soil characteristics are contained in this report placed
here under.
1.1 Scope of this Report
This report contains the following information:
Introduction
Planning of geotechnical investigation programme including scope of work
Location and Seismicity of the area
Methodology of investigation

a) Soil samples,, both representative and undisturbed (where necessary) for classification
tests and other laboratory tests for determining engineering properties.
b) Obtain soundings of penetration resistance by Standard Penetration test in the boreholes.
c) Drilling in rock in weathered and hard rock, obtain rock cores of Nx size by diamond core
drilling method using double/triple tube core barrels, determination of material
characteristics (Strength/Structure/Colour/Texture/Grain size/Rock), mass characteristics ,
laboratory tests for determining engineering prop
properties
erties of existing rock, i.e. unconfined
compressive strength, water absorption etc.
2.1. Scope of work:
To investigate the surface conditions, boreholes were planned at proposed structure
locations. Disturbed and Undisturbed samples were to be collected from all boreholes to assess
the soil/rock characteristics in laboratory.
2.1.1 The summary of the field work is given below:

3.2 Seismicity
The seismic hazard map of India was updated in 2000 by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Map showing seismic zones of India is shown in Fig. 3.2. The part of high speed rail link
alignment between Sabarmati to Mumbai in Zone III and few areas lies in zone - IV. The
maximum intensity expected in these areas would be around MSK VII.

Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at 1.0 m interval as per the procedure in IS: 2131 –
1981. For conducting the test, the bottom of the borehole was properly cleaned and split spoon
sampler was properly seated in position in the borehole. The split spoon sampler resting on the
bottom of borehole was allowed to sink under its own weight; then the sampler was seated 15 cm
with the blows of the hammer of 63.5 Kg weight falling through 75 cm. Thereafter, the split spoon
sampler was further driven by 30 cm. The number of blows required to affect each 15 cm of
penetration was recorded. The first 15 cm of drive is considered to be seating drive.
The total blows of penetration for the second and third 15 cm of penetration is termed the
penetration resistance N. The „N‟ values are indicative of the compactness / relative density of
cohesion less soils and consistency of cohesive soils.

a) Sampling in rock/ boulder strata is done with either tungsten carbide or diamond core bits (of
76mm)
b) A double tube core barrel is used for sampling in weathered or fractured rock. Core samples
are collected from hard rock strata and % of core recovery and RQD (Rock Quality
Designation) are determined.
c) Core samples recovered will be stored properly in accordance with IS: 4078. In core boxes
these samples will be stacked with depth identification marks.
d) If the core recovery is less than 60% then SPT shall be performed before commencing the
next drill run. Drilling runs are limited to 1.5m for NX type and 3.0m for NQ type drilling.

Note:
1. As per Terzaghi & Peck, in case of cohesive soil there is a relationship between N value & consistency.
2
Cu = N"/15 (in kg/cm ) (From Test book of soil mechanics & foundation engineering by Prof. V.N.S.Murthy)
Where N" is the corrected SPT N value.
2. In case of cohesionless, for angle of shearing resistance (f), fig - 1 of IS : 6403 was used.
3 In case of clay soil, if N>30 then it may be considered limited to 30. (From Test book of Foundation Design Manual by Narayan V Nayak)

Each straight line is characterized by calculating its gradient m (tangent of the inclination)
its intercept b on the vertical (axial stress) axis. In each case the range of confining pressure in which
the respective straight line is valid shall
hall be shown on abscissa.
Equation: y = mx + b
Strength Envelope
Using parameters m and b, the angle of internal friction Ø and a value for the apparent
cohesion c (in the sense of coulomb
coulomb’s failure theory) may be calculated using the formulae:
