One of my favorite scientist is Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American engineer and physicist who made dozens

of breakthroughs in the production, transmission and application of electric power. I admire him for his
invention of rotating magnetic field as the basis of first alternating-current (AC) motor, and his
development of AC generation and transmission technology. He also invented the tesla coil—an
induction coil widely used in radio technology.

He was born in July 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia (Austrian Empire). His father was a priest in the Serbian
orthodox church and his mother was unschooled but highly intelligent. At the age of 7, his brother was
killed in a riding accident, resulted to his life-long mental illness. He enrolled at Technical University of
Graz to study math and physics and at the University of Prague to study philosophy. He worked for
Thomas Edison (his chief rival) as engineer and with Westinghouse (Edison’s major competitor). He died
in his room on January 7, 1943.

1. He was born during a lightning storm.

2. He has an obsessive personality.
