Chem 1109 - Chemistry of Copper - Summary

Five Steps:
1) Nitric acid oxidizes copper metal to copper (II) nitrate
2) Adding sodium hydroxide to copper (II) nitrate precipitates copper (II) hydroxide
3) Heating of copper (II) hydroxide forms copper (II) oxide
4) Sulfuric acid dissolves copper (II) oxide and forms copper (II) sulfate
5) Magnesium metal reduces copper (II) ions to copper metal

Oxidation and Reduction: OIL RIG

At the start, copper metal is oxidized to Cu2+ ion
At the end, Cu2+ ion is reduced back to copper metal

Learn the Four Types of Reactions:

Combination A + B → AB
Single displacement A + BC → AC + B
Double displacement AB + CD → AD + CB
Decomposition AB → A + B
