What is Cloud Computing?
• In Cloud Computing the word cloud is used as an metaphor for “the
internet”
• Simply put, cloud computing is the delivery of computing services-
servers, storage, databases, networking, software and analytics and
more - over the internet.
• Cloud Computing consist of hardware and software resources made
available on the internet as they are managed by the third party
services. These services typically provide access to advanced software
applications, high end network of server computers.
• “You don’t generate your own electricity. Why generate your own
computing”- Jeff Bezos, Amazon.
What does it provides?
• Cloud computing provides shared services as opposed to local servers
or storage resources.
• Enables access to information from most web-enabled hardware.
• Allows for cost savings – reduced facility, hardware/software
investments, support
• The goal of cloud computing is to allow users to take benefit from all
these technologies, without the need for deep knowledge.
• The cloud helps the user to cut cost and helps the user to focus on
their core business.
Service Models

Software

Platform

Infrastructure
Service Model
Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

• A service model that involves outsourcing

the basic infrastructure used to support
operations – including storage, hardware,
servers, and networking components.

• The service provider owns the

infrastructure equipment and is
responsible for housing, running and
maintaining it. The customer typically
pays on a per use basis
Service Model
Platform-as-a-Service(PaaS)

• A service model that involves outsourcing

the basic infrastructure and
platform.(Windows, Unix).

• PaaS facilities deploying application without

the cost and complexity of buying and
managing the underlying hardware and
software where the application are hosted.
Service Model
Software-as-a-Service(SaaS)

• Also referred as “software on demand”, this

service model involves outsourcing the
infrastructure, platform, and
software/application.

• Typically the services are available to the

customer for a fee, pay-as-you-go, or a no
charge model.

• The customer access the application over

internet.
Advantages of Cloud Computing:
• Back-up and restore data: Once the data is stored in the cloud, it is easier to
get back-up and restore that data.
• Improved collaboration: Cloud applications improve collaboration by
allowing groups of people to quickly and easily share information in cloud.
• Excellent accessibility: It allows us to access store information anywhere,
anytime in the whole world, using an internet connection. It increases the
organization productivity and efficiency by ensuring that our data is
accessible.
• Low maintenance Cost: Cloud Computing reduces both hardware and
software maintenance cost for organization.
• Mobility: Cloud computing allows us to easily access all cloud data via
mobile.
Disadvantages of Cloud Computing :
• Internet Connectivity: In cloud computing, every data is stored on the
cloud, and we access these data through the cloud, and we access
these data through the cloud by using the internet connection. If you
do not have good internet connectivity, you cannot access these data,
• Vendor Lock-in: It is the biggest disadvantage. Organization may face
problems when transferring their services from one vendor to
another. As, different vendors provide different platforms, that can
cause difficulty moving from one cloud to another.
• Limited Control: Cloud infrastructure is completely owned, managed
and monitored by service provider, so the cloud users have less
control over the function and execution of services within a cloud
infrastructure.
• Security: While sending the data on the cloud, there may be a chance
that your information is hacked.
Conclusion :
• Cloud Computing increases profitability by improving resource
utilization. Cost are driven down by delivering appropriate resources
only for the time those resources are needed.
• Cloud Computing has enabled teams and organization to steamline
lengthy procurement process.
• Leaders in IBM, Google and Microsoft have provided their initiative in
promoting the cloud.
• Big IT companies are also building their own version of cloud.
• It can be modified to be used by everyone.
