MICROSTRUCTURAL EXAMINATION Rev. : 01

1.0 PURPOSE: Microstructural Examination

2.0 SCOPE: This document describes the procedure of microstructure examination by

destructive and non-destructive method for determination of general microstructure of
metallic materials.

3.0 RANGE: NA

4.0 INSTRUMENT: Optical microscope with CCD camera compatible with computer
and image analyzer software MIC, abrasive polishing papers, hand grinders, diamond
paste, Alumina paste, polishing cloth, Electrolytic polishing machine, cold setting resin.

5.0 REFERENCE: As per ASTM E3, ASTM E407, ASTM E 112

6.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:
Engineer – To mark the sample for sectioning, to supervise the activities of technician, to
suggest the etching technique for sample, to view the sample under microscope, take the
images of sample and to make interpretation on the microstructure, to carry out the
analysis by using software.
Technician (Metallographer) –Etching of sample and to carry out the analysis by using
software
Helper – To cut the sample, mould the sample, polishing of sample under guidance of
Metallographer.

7.0 PROCEDURE:
1. For carrying out the tests, one should refer product specification before deciding
for the sample preparation
2. Procedure for sample preparation
3. Cut the sample in longitudinal direction.
4. Prepare the sample as per Manual procedure or NDT procedure of

5. Select suitable etching technique for the sample as per ASTM E407 standard.
View the sample under microscope.
6. Then take the three images of sample at 100X, 200X, 400X, 500X and 1200X
magnification each, with the help of CCD camera and pixel view software, which
best represents the metal structure.
7. Save the images in folder named ad lab No and in working directory (which is
named as “Current year” in D drive of computer).
8. Carry out the interpretation using ASM handbook vol.9
9. Enter your interpretation on lab record slip. AMCO/MEC/FR/008
