Title: Responsibilities of a School Head

Introduction:

The school principal is the highest-ranking administrator in an elementary, middle

or high-school. As managers, they are responsible for financial operations, building maintenance,
school policy regarding discipline, public relations, and the overall operation of the school.

Learning Objectives:

Know and describe the responsibilities of a school head

Statement of Concerns:

1. What are the roles and responsibilities of a school head?

2. Why it is important to know the responsibilities of a school head?

Discussion of each Concern:

Head teachers are the senior teachers at a school and are responsible for managing
staff and setting policies for the school. They motivate and lead their teaching staffs, evaluate
their performance and set goals and expectations.

They provide vision and leadership to a school and are ultimately responsible for keeping the
school running smoothly. The presence of a good head teacher is key to the recruitment and
retention of good teachers.

Head teachers or principals often provide training to their staff. In addition, they often serve as
the spokesperson for their school to parents and the community at large.

Role of Head of School

1. Leadership and Management.

2. Responsibility for Teaching and Students
3. Responsibility for Research
4. Knowledge Transfer
5. People Management
6. Financial Management
 Understanding the financial limitations and flexibility of the school
 Regularly approving and revising school budgets.
 Reviewing and analyzing income and expenditures on a regular basis,
ensuring that resource allocation follows the school development plan.
 Understanding that the school income must be handled in accordance with
relevant requirements, regulations and rules.
 Organizing controls of budgets, including accounting and reporting systems
that will monitor finances.
 Hiring an accountant as an auditor for regular school account tracking and
evaluations.
 Reporting the use of school funds to the relevant parties

Summary of Concerns:

The role of the principal changed from school manager to school instructional leader
and then to the school reform leader. With this shift in role focus, principal’s retained their
management roles. Principal’s currently play multiple roles: school manager, instructional
leader, and the leader of school reform.

Conclusion:

Principals oversee all higher-level operations in a school. They create a safe learning
environment and set performance goals both for students and teachers, and oversee the process
so that those goals are attained.
