Responsibilities of A School Head
Responsibilities of A School Head
Introduction:
Learning Objectives:
Statement of Concerns:
Head teachers are the senior teachers at a school and are responsible for managing
staff and setting policies for the school. They motivate and lead their teaching staffs, evaluate
their performance and set goals and expectations.
They provide vision and leadership to a school and are ultimately responsible for keeping the
school running smoothly. The presence of a good head teacher is key to the recruitment and
retention of good teachers.
Head teachers or principals often provide training to their staff. In addition, they often serve as
the spokesperson for their school to parents and the community at large.
Summary of Concerns:
The role of the principal changed from school manager to school instructional leader
and then to the school reform leader. With this shift in role focus, principal’s retained their
management roles. Principal’s currently play multiple roles: school manager, instructional
leader, and the leader of school reform.
Conclusion:
Principals oversee all higher-level operations in a school. They create a safe learning
environment and set performance goals both for students and teachers, and oversee the process
so that those goals are attained.
