regulate matters involving violation of consumer rights, misleading or false advertisements, unfair trade practices and enforcement of consumer rights. The Central Government appoints the members of the CCPA. The authority will consist of a Chief Commissioner along with other such prescribed members. Recent Notice issued to Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and Paytm Mall by CCPA : CCPA has launched a nationwide campaign to prevent sale of spurious and counterfeit goods that violate Quality Control Orders published by the Central Government. Directions issued to District Collectors across the country to investigate unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights concerning manufacture or sale of such goods. CCPA has taken suo-moto cognizance against the above e-commerce entities found to be selling Pressure Cookers in violation to the Domestic Pressure Cooker (Quality Control) Order, 2020 issued by the Central Government under Section 16 (1) of the BIS Act, 2016. Such pressure cookers which do not conform to the compulsory standards are held to be ‘defective’ and promoting their sale amounts to an ‘unfair trade practice’ under the Consumer protection Act, 2019. Rule 4(2) of the Consumer Protection (E-commerce) Rules, 2020 specifies that no e- commerce entity shall adopt any unfair trade practice, whether in the course of business on its platform or otherwise was also highlighted by the CCPA The authority has sought response from the e-commerce entities within seven days from issuance of the notice, failing which necessary action may be initiated against them under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Now, after having understood the functions of the CCPA , let us now take a look at a recent notice that was sent by the CCPA in the past week against an unfair trade practice by ecommerce companies : Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and PayTM Mall. CCPA had launched a nationwide campaign to prevent sale of spurious and counterfeit goods that violate Quality Control Orders published by the Central Government In this regard, directions were issued to District Collectors across the country to investigate unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights concerning manufacture or sale of such goods. In furtherance to the campaign, CCPA has taken suo-moto cognizance against e- above commerce entities found to be selling Pressure Cookers in violation to the Domestic Pressure Cooker (Quality Control) Order, 2020 issued by the Central Government under Section 16 (1) of the BIS Act, 2016. By the said Order, Domestic Pressure Cooker are mandated to conform to Indian Standard IS 2347: 2017 and bear the standard mark under a license from BIS with effect from 1st August 2020. Now, CCPA has said that such pressure cookers which do not conform to the compulsory quality standards can be held to be defective in accordance with the definition of “ defect” specified under the
