CARESCAPETM Monitor B850 Barcode Reader

Introduction
These instructions describe how to connect the CARESCAPE Monitor B850
Barcode Reader (barcode reader) used to scan and record patient identification
information from barcodes. The instructions include bracket holster installation for a
GCXTM medical device mounting system, and molded holster installation for a
horizontal surface such as a desktop. Also included are instructions for proper
placement of the device on a horizontal surface when not using a holster.

Barcode reader installation


The barcode reader comes configured and ready to connect.

NOTE
Never alter the default configuration of the reader itself. If altered, the
CARESCAPE Monitor B850 Barcode Reader will not operate properly with the
CARESCAPE Monitor B850.

Always use a GE-supplied CARESCAPE Monitor B850 Barcode Reader. No


other barcode reader will operate properly with the CARESCAPE Monitor
B850.

Barcode reader’s country setting


This barcode reader is configured for:

Before you connect the barcode reader to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850, you
need to make sure the country setting matches the keyboard locale of the monitor.
Refer to “Verifying country setting matches keyboard locale” on page 5.

Installing the barcode reader holster


To install the bracket holster on a GCX system, refer to “GCX system” below.

To install the molded holster on a desktop, refer to “Desktop” on page 4.

GCX system
To install the bracket holster on a GCX system, complete the following:

1. Use (4) #10 x 5/8 screws to attach the bracket holster to the GCX bracket to
create the GCX holster assembly.

2. Slide the GCX holster assembly from step 1 onto the GCX track.

3. Position the GCX holster assembly in the desired location, and secure in place
by tightening the Allen set screw on the GCX bracket.
4. Set the barcode reader in the mounted GCX holster assembly.

Desktop
The barcode reader molded holster may be secured to a desktop or other horizontal
surface, or the molded holster may be left unsecured.

NOTE
If left in an unsecured position, ensure that the molded holster and/or the
barcode reader itself is placed in an area where it is not subject to falling or
entanglement.

To secure the molded holster to a horizontal surface, complete the following:

1. Attach the molded holster to the horizontal surface using 2 customer-supplied


screws.
Use a type of screw appropriate for the material of the horizontal surface.

2. Place the barcode reader in the molded holster.

The barcode reader itself may be placed directly on a horizontal surface, resting in a
tripod position.

3. Continue with “Verifying country setting matches keyboard locale”.

Verifying country setting matches keyboard locale
To ensure proper operation of the barcode reader, the country setting of the barcode
reader must match the keyboard locale of the CARESCAPE Monitor B850.

NOTE
Whenever the barcode reader is moved to a different monitor, it is necessary to
verify that the country setting of the barcode reader matches the keyboard locale
of the monitor.

1. Check the name of the country on the label under “Barcode reader’s country
setting” on page 1.
2. On the monitor where you plan to install the barcode reader, log into Webmin.
Refer to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 technical manual for instructions on
logging into Webmin.
3. Select Configuration > Language.
4. Check if the value displayed in the Please select the new keyboard locale field
matches the name of the country printed on the label on page 1.
a. If the values match, continue with “Connecting the barcode reader” below.
b. If the values do not match, find out which value is correct and take the
applicable action specified below.
‹ If the keyboard locale of the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 is not
correct, refer to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 technical manual for
instructions on selecting the keyboard locale.
When you have corrected the keyboard locale, continue with
“Connecting the barcode reader” below.

‹ If the barcode reader’s country setting is not correct, contact GE


Technical Support for assistance.
Connecting the barcode reader
1. Locate the 4 USB ports at the back of the CARESCAPE Monitor B850, or a
USB port on the display, if available.

2. Connect the barcode reader’s cable to the appropriate USB port.

NOTE
When you connect the barcode reader cable to a system that is powered on,
several tones will sound to indicate a proper connection. Every time the system
is turned on with the barcode reader connected, the tones will sound.

Although the barcode reader will function properly when connected to any of
the USB ports, refer to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 technical manual to
determine the appropriate port based on your system’s configuration and
accessories.

3. Place the barcode reader in the holster, if applicable.


4. Confirm the cable is not pinched or restricted, and the barcode reader rests
securely in the holster, if applicable.
5. Refer to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 technical manual for information on
the barcode reader configuration and supported barcode parser types.

6. Refer to the CARESCAPE Monitor B850 user manual for information on how
to use the barcode reader.
