THEORY OF ELASTICITY AND PLASTICITY (ME G641)
Comprehensive Exam–Part B (Open Book)
Max. Marks: 40 Date: 08–12–2017
Duration: 120 min Weightage: 20%
 There are 4 questions in this question paper. Answer all the questions.
 Answer all the parts of a question at one place. Illegible parts of the answer book will not be graded.

[1] An underground water pipe of internal and external radii a and b, respectively, carries a fluid at a pressure p.
Considering its outer surface to be constrained and using the Airy stress function ϕ(r) = A ln r + Br2,
(i) Determine the stress components in terms of unknown constants A and B. Under plane–strain conditions,
determine the strains and integrate them to get displacements.
(ii) Using appropriate displacement and traction boundary conditions, determine the constants A and B and
express the stress field in terms of these constants. [5+5 = 10]

[2] For a torsional shaft with square cross–section of side 2b, considering the origin to be at the centroid of the
cross–section, the Prandtl stress function is given by ϕ(x,y) = a0(x2–b2)(y2–b2)

(i) Determine the constant a0 such that the energy functional U           2  0 dxdy

is minimized, where μ is the shear modulus and θ0 is the angle of twist per unit length of the shaft.
(ii) Determine the relation between the torque transmitted, Mt and θ0. [5+5 = 10]

[3] The uniform rigid bar OAB shown in Figure 1, is hinged at O

and supported by elastic rods AC and BD. Both rods are made of
same material, are of equal length L and have same area of
cross–section A.
(i) Write the equations of equilibrium and compatibility
conditions and determine the forces in the rods AC and BD.
Determine which rod will yield first and the corresponding
load P in terms of the yield strength σY.
(ii) Assuming both the rods to be perfectly plastic (no
hardening), determine the load P at which both the rods
have become fully plastic in terms of the yield strength σY.
(iii) If the load is removed at any point beyond this state, determine the residual stresses in the rods in terms of
the yield strength σY. [4+2+4 = 10]

[4] The elastic stress field for a thick spherical pressure vessel, whose internal and external radii are a and b,
A B A B
respectively, is given by  rr   3 and        3 .
3 r 3 2r
(i) If the outer surface of the spherical pressure vessel has a traction given by t = σ0 er, where er is the unit
vector along radial direction and σ0>0 and inner surface is traction free, determine the stress field.
(ii) Find the location of onset of yielding and the corresponding value of σ0, if the yield strength of the material
is σY. Use both von–Mises and Tresca’s yield criterion and choose the one that gives the minimum value.
(iii) Derive the stress field in the elastic and plastic regions of the spherical pressure vessel, upon subsequent
loading, assuming perfectly plastic behaviour for the pressure vessel.
(iv) Derive the relation between the plastic boundary and the applied traction and hence, determine the value of
σ0 at which the pressure vessel is entirely plastic. [2+2+4+2 = 10]
