Tasks for Mendeley reference manager

Task one:
1- Create an account for yourself (use your personal email and choose a suitable password).
Keep your password you will use it several times to open your account.

2- Download Mendeley reference manager

3- Put article files on your desktop from the e learning site, they will contain one folder
contain two articles on Insulin resistance and another two articles on obesity but not
inside a folder. So, you will put three items on your desktop one folder named insulin
resistance and two files named obesity one and obesity two.

4- Create three folders on desktop: name them diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension

5- Click on Mendeley reference manager to open your empty library

6- Put files into your Mendeley library


A- By dragging files from the desktop (obesity one and obesity two)
B- By browsing your computer using the insulin resistance folder (one file then the
other file from folder of insulin resistance)
C- By using the Mendeley Web from inside Mendeley Reference Manager by click
on tools. Then click on search for articles from online.
D- Put your key words inside the window for that
E- choose one file on prevalence of Diabetes:
- choose files have PDFs.
- Choose the last 5 years
- Choose the most relevant files
- Click on the file then go to extensions

- Then press on Mendeley Reference Manger
- The file you choose is already first one and selected then press add
- Wait till added so the blue color will disappear and become transparent
- Go to your library from the right lower end then the file in your library
- Double click on the file: the PDF will appear from inside Mendeley
- Click on download: the file will be downloaded on your computer in a
folder named diabetes.
F- By using google scholar choose one file on Prevalence of hypertension: choose a
file has PDFs and download them on desktop on folder called hypertension.

G- By using PubMed choose a file on prevalence of dyslipidemia: choose files have


PDFs and download them on desktop on folder called dyslipidemia)

7- From Mendeley library create folders from new collection window.

8- Make five collections: Obesity, Insulin resistance, Diabetes, Hypertension, Dyslipidemia

9- Drag every file after selection from inside your library of Mendeley Reference Manager
into the allocated folder.

10- Now you have 5 collections every one contains one file related to the folder name but
the obesity file and insulin resistance file contain two files

11- Arrange your files according to the year of publication for all references

12- Have a photocopy of your library with all files arranged by year

13- Click on every collection and photocopy every collection with its files (5 copies)

14- Choose two files to make them your Favorites


Task two:
1- Open a word file called Obesity word click on references then click on
Mendeley icon on the right-hand side. Your Mendeley library will open.

3- Go first to the citation styles and look which style is the default for you. If not,
Vancouver goes to the bottom of the panel and choose select another style. In the empty
window write Vancouver and all styles of Vancouver will be displayed. Select Elsevier
Vancouver .
Then click on update citation style.

5- Choose collection called obesity by click on the up and down arrow at the end of the
small window called all references. It will open for you your Mendeley and chose the
obesity collection.

Put your cursor at the end of the first paragraph and go to panel on the right-hand side
(Mendeley). You have all files inside the collection obesity will appear.
7- Select the first reference that you know that this reference is related to the first
paragraph., click on insert citation.

8- Then go to the end of the second paragraph and put your cursor there then go to the
second reference in the list and select insert citation. A number will appear too at the end
of the second paragraph.

9- Write the word references under the two paragraphs and then go to more and select
bibliography will written under the references in a Vancouver style.

11- The references will be in a list

12- Photocopy your references list


Task 3: How to make annotation
1- Go to the obesity collection and double click on the first file called obesity one in
your collection to open the PDF from inside your library.
2- Select the Key findings on the upper and left side using the orange
color(chose color before selection).
3- Click on note or right click inside your selected part . Then a menu will pop. This menu
has your name and you write below your name a note about what you have selected.

4- So, write key findings.

Click enter : A sticky note will appear on the selection

To delete annotation click on the three dots or by one click


To delete the selection double click on the selection and click on delete annotation
again.

Now we need to select a table or graph so go to highlight rectangle and select


A plus will + select graph use it.
Task five: How to make notebook:

1- Click on notebook
2- Open a new page
3- On the new page write the name of title of your topic . Write obesity

5- Then you can write your comments or any one comments related to this note.
6- You will have one note for obesity but you can cut and paste from multiple PDFs
on just one note called obesity
7- Then go open your document and select the paragraph called summary at the end
of the article you want to keep it in your note and double click on it and a menu
will pop chose add notebook.

8- A note will be inside a blue rectangular and in italics will be under the not obesity
9- You can open as you want PDFs and select whatever you wand and add to the
same notebook under obesity.
10- If you click on the notebook at a certain paragraph the article from which we got
this paragraph will be Infront of you.
