Lighting of the Advent Wreath
Leader: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. Through him, all things were
made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not
understood it. Light is the symbol of creation. In the beginning,
God said,

People: Let there be Light!

Leader: Light is the symbol of Christ’s coming to earth.

Jesus said,

People: I am the Light of the World!

Leader: Light is the symbol of God’s presence in us. Each

believer is told

People: Let your Light shine!

Unison and Silent Prayers of Confession Call to

God of Grace and Glory, we come before you confessing the Confession:
ways in which we have been caught up in the frenzied spirit Luke 2:10
of the holidays and turned away from Your Spirit of Peace;
the times we have focused so much on our own lives and
desires, that we have neglected the voices of your children
who cry out for Justice; in our focus on making the season
perfect, we have turned away from the hurting people and by Henri J. M.
broken places in our world in need of Healing; in the times Nouwen
we have dismissed Christmas as a time only for children, and
we have stubbornly closed our hearts to your amazing gift of
Love. O Holy Child of Bethlehem, Word Become Flesh, our Affirmation of
Savior and King, hear us as we humbly pray, cast out our sin
and enter in; be born in us today. Grace:

Thanks be to God! ✞ Hymn - What Child is This
What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

Refrain:
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom Shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,

Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian fear: for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Refrain

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,

Come, peasant, king, to own Him;
The King of Kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
