1. If a ball is thrown into the air with a velocity of 40 ft/s, its height in feet after t seconds is
given by 𝑦 = 40𝑡 − 16𝑡2
a. Find the average velocity for the time periode beginning when t=2 and lasting
i. 0,5 seconds
ii. 0,1 second
iii. 0,05 seconds
iv. 0,01 second
b. Estimate the instantaneous velocity when t=2

Answer :
a. =
𝑉𝑎𝑣𝑔 (𝑡2 )−(𝑡1 )
𝑡2− 𝑡1 𝑦 = 40𝑡 − 16𝑡 2

(2.5)−(2)
𝑉1 = 0,5

0 − 16
=
0,5
= −32

(2.1) − (2) 0,1

𝑉2 = 13,44 − 16

=
0,1
= −25,6

(2.05)−(2)
𝑉3 = 0.05
14.76 − 16
=

0,05
= −24,8

(2.01)−(2)
𝑉4 = 0.01
15.7584 − 16
=

0,01
= −24,16
b. To find the instantaneous velocity we will differentiate the function
𝑦 ′ = 40 − 32𝑡
𝑦 ′ (2) = −24
3. For the function f whose graph is given, state the value of each quantity, if it exists. If it
does not exist, explain why.

Answer :

a. lim 𝑓(𝑥) = not exist, cause lim and lim 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒
𝑥→1 𝑥→1 𝑥→1+
(𝑥)=4 −
b. lim
𝑥→3 (𝑥)=2

c. lim
𝑥→3+

d. lim 𝑓(𝑥) = not exist, cause lim and lim 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒
𝑥→3 𝑥→3 𝑥→3+

e. f(3) = 3

7. lim (𝑥) = −1 , lim (𝑥) = 2 , (0) = 1

𝑥→0- 𝑥→0+

Answer :
(𝑥) = 2 , lim (𝑥) = 4 , lim (𝑥) = 2 , (3) = 3 , 𝑓(−2) = 1
9. lim
𝑥→3+ 𝑥→−2
𝑥→3

Answer :

Guess the value of the limit (if it exists) by evaluating the function at the given numbers
(correct to six decimal places).

12. lim 𝑥2−2𝑥

𝑥→−1 𝑥2−𝑥−2
x = 0, -0.5, -0.9, -0.95, -0.99, -0.999, -2, -1.5, -1.1, -1.01, -1.001

Answer :

12.
x 𝑥2 − 2𝑥
𝑥2 − 𝑥 −2
0 0
-0,5 -1
-0.9 -9
-0.95 -19
-0.99 -99
-0.999 -999
-2 2
-1,5 3
-1,1 11
-1,01 101
-1,001 1001
After examining the table of funct ional values, we can see that the -values do not seem to
approach any one single value
Use a table of values to estimate the value of the limit. If you have a graphing device, use it to
confirm your result graphically.

15. lim √𝑥+4−2

𝑥→0 𝑥
Answer :

x -0,1 -0,01 -0,001 0,001 0,01 0,1

f(x) 0,25158 0,25016 0,25002 0,24984 0,24846 0,24998

As x approaches 0 from each side, the value of f(x) tends to 0.25

√𝑥+4−2
lim = 0,25
𝑥→0 𝑥

19. (a) By graphing thef unction𝑓(𝑥) = (cos 2𝑥 − cos 𝑥)/𝑥 2 and zooming in toward the point
where the graph crosses the y-axis, estimate the value of lim 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥→0

(b) Check your answer in part (a) by evaluating f(x) for values of x that approach 0.

Answer :

20.
a. Estimate the value of

sin 𝑥
lim

𝑥→0 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜋

by graphing the function f(x) = sin 𝑥. State your answer correct to two decimal places.
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜋

b. Check your answer in part (a) by evaluating f(x) for values of x that approach 0.
Answer :
20. a.
b.

0,0001 0,318310

0,001 0,318310

From the table, it seems lim ≈ 0.318310
𝑥→0 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜋

Prove the statement using the 𝜀, definition of a limit and illustrate with a diagram like Figure15.

30. lim(2𝑥 − 5) = 3
